Big :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: for your mom MT!! That is so scary. I agree, if it was my dog I would be heartsick, but he would be put down after doing something like that. As RR said so well, no one is a winner here. Hopefully your mom can still have a friendship with her friend despite this.

I agree DQ, this is her best friend, since the late 1960s... but they live in a very family oriented neighborhood. I can't help but wonder what would have happened should a kid have wandered into the yard. My mom mentioned that the dog was going back to her breeder, but I don't know if she filed a report or what she told the ER doc... I'll have to find out. I know her friend is heartsick.
If her friend is really a good friend, and has proper ethics, she will do the responsible thing and have the dog put down herself.

It is a terrible, terrible thing when it happens, but as a dog owner, you have got to be responsible for the behavior of your dog.

Best of luck to your mom, MT, as she recovers. Sorry for all parties in this one. No one comes out a winner.
I agree with everything RR said. So sorry for your mom MayaTy.

My sister's then 5 year old was bitten by their neighbors Rhodesian Ridgeback. She did take him to the doctor right away for all the reasons FlashGordon mentioned. Even though the dog had a terrible reputation among the neighbors for its behavior it still put a major strain on their relationship with the neighbors which has not ever improved even though the dog was not euthanized.

well the dog can't be put down right now because she has a litter of puppies that are too young to be without her. I dunno how I feel about it. She's protective by nature (a german shepherd), on her own property with puppies inside the house and a stranger walks up to the door alone. I absolutely think that she should not be allowed loose on the property anymore, but I'm not sure she should be put down. Just not sure.

:jingles: :jingles: for your mom. The ER doc by law must report a dog bite in most states. Also, depending on the state she may not have to put the dog down.

Gosh, that's horrible! I'm so sorry for your mom, and for her friend. It is devastating to be the owner of a dog whom you love who has bitten someone. I was in a similar situation a couple summers ago and it broke my heart to have to let the dog go. But I could not have an aggressive dog who bites. Gosh, what a sad situation all around.

according to the CT dog bite and leash law, it's fuzzy with respect to what would happen since she was not "roaming" or off leash off property. It does say it will be investigated, but otherwise, not clear.
