What does transitioning mean to you?; didn't think I would have to ask this already!

I got the new job officially on Friday, but it was pretty common knowledge that I was moving on. I was told there would be a longer transitioning period as they were not back filling my position and it would be absorbed among team members, but I was to be 100% involved with my new job. Because this took so long, I put up with a lot of poop over the summer. Busy work...can you find every number back to January? Stuff like that. I did it with no complaints (at least at work).

Just got a meeting invite to do the 2012 budget for my old job...WHAT?

Transitioning means to me that I would be helping someone take over what I currently do and provide support in my daily role. Not do long term projects to support my old job.

Just want a sanity check before I quietly escalate.

I only know transitions of the Dressage kind. But still complex!

When I left my previous job, I left a very detailed, lengthy "transition packet". It was about 20 pages and gave my successor everything she needed to know about how to do the job (down to the colors of file folders, timelines, etc.)

She still had questions about things over the course of about a year and a half and I always answered (I'm a pushover).

Hopefully it was an oversight and they sent the request to you in error. You shouldn't be doing work for your old position. While I see nothing wrong with guiding your successor and offering advice, it's not your 'job' to continue to do the hard work.

If they still want you to do some work, you should charge on an hourly basis.

I would escalate by asking for confirmation that the reason you were invited to this meeting was to support the new person who will be taking this on and answering any questions... It's probably not, but an effective way to make the hint without saying "that's not my job" ;)

Ditto this.

Or ask exactly what the details of the "transition" involve, and what the timeline is.

My husband is facing a similar situation right now. He keeps being told he's currently being "transitioned" from Asst. Director to Director but all that seems to mean right now is that he is doing BOTH jobs. He's been told it could be a few more months or as long as a year depending on which board member you talk to.

Learn from his mistake-- get clarification NOW on what is expected of you and how long they will want you having involvement in both roles.

Great ideas. I didn't say anything to anyone yet. I did answer questions professionally during the meeting, but didn't volunteer to take anything on. I reached out to my replacement. I know her well because we have been on the same team for 2 years. She said that she knew she was taking on my old responsibilities, but had been given no further guidance. She had a great attitude about the change so I feel better.

I wish there was some 20 page document I could hand off! I wish I was that organized! ;)

Don't be surprised if you keep both jobs - there is a lot of that going on right now.

But I agree, clarification is a must. In writing if you can get it.
