For those who have not seen these via facebook.....I have put together some brochures/info for our barn to pass along to others. While some of the information is specific to Virginia the rest is more generic horse 101 type stuff. Below are some of the things I have already posted on the farm FB page. Currently, I have one more brochure entitled "Horses for Beginners" or something similar. We are working on a farm website  which will house this type of info.

My question to you guys....what other topics would be benificial to you as a horse person? It could be something for a brochure or perhaps a list of some sort. I'd like to get a few new ideas so I'll have something to work on this winter.

Thanks!!

As a new horse owner, I wish I would have known:

How to find a good farrier
Sheath cleaning
Feed considerations
Helmet fitting
Saddle fitting
Tips on all of those little things it seems like you have to learn the hard way! :)

Great stuff!

My emergency kit would have needles, 5 and 10 cc syringes, and various IV and IM meds (ask your veterinarian).
And steri-strips for small wounds.

Thanks guys! Keep 'em coming! Someone suggested "Trail Etiquette"....what do you think?

Also, BH1, would those be things everyone would have, or just you?

Maybe an option to an Emergency list. Some folks are not comfortable with IM or IV meds, and an emergency is the worst time to practice.
Having meds on hand should be discussed with your veterinarian.
I would want to be able to medicate before the vet arrives (in a weather situation it may be days before you see the vet!).

"Trail Etiquette" is another great idea for a newbie horseperson (and some old timers too!).

Trail Etiquette and safety (trail bag with hoof pick, flashlight, cell phone, etc), arena etiquette, barn etiquette.
Common illnesses in horses and how to detect and treat, when to call the vet.

What a great idea!

I'm going to disagree on trail etiquette--I've seen widely varied ideas of trail etiquette. In our area for example, we have the Clifton Horse Society who largely helps keep up the trails, but I've had members of it SCOLD me on horse back when they see me on a trail because I'm not riding with nippers to clear the trails while I ride....um, hello, I don't run with sharp objects and I certainly don't ride my horse with sharp objects or try to cut limbs from horseback--I'm glad your trail horses are better trained than mine, but beginner trail riders or beginner trail horses don't belong nipping branches from horseback or getting on and off a lot to nip. I consider myself lucky that I can get prissy show horses on trails, but there is no way they're going to tolerate packs, branches falling down etc.

One thought would be a description of all the possible vaccines and what they are designed to prevent and the windows of time to give them (after the frost, before the frost, spring, summer etc) and possible ways to give them such as nasal v. injection). I find a lot of people don't really understand shots. There are also a lot of different thoughts on them and it might be a good idea to point out where opinions vary.

Excellent idea!

I once had someone who had owned horses for years (someone who later became a very scary professional :o ) say to me, "But what exactly IS Coggins disease?!" Yoiks.
