oh happy day

All I did was call and ask for a price reduction ;)

Same options, just reduced the rate

TOC needs a "like" icon :teehee:

Oh, pray, share this information with us dear BH1! Which company do you use?

I have been very very very loyal to DirecTv for over 15 years! :o I call about annually and ask, "so what can you do for ME??", but don't usually get a reduction in overall bill, just free channels and such.

Teach me Obi Wan!

Time Warner. I called and said I needed them to sharpen their pencil. Customer Service rep was fabulous.
I'm sure she has a pile of scripts to read, but still did a great job. My cable bill includes internet, TV and a land line (which is silly to have, but now it's pretty much free).
Suze Orman says we should do this all the time - get better rates/fees from every company with whom we do business. I decided to take a shot at it. Thanks Suze!

jilli, if it hasn't worked for you in the past, the magic words are "I'd like to cancel my service, please." They will transfer you to a Retention Specialist, and it's that person's job to keep you subscribed at all costs. First they'll try to upsell you to a package, like TV/Internet/Phone. If you politely refuse, then they will try to offer you additional services at your current rate. I usually counter by asking for the promotional rate being offered to their new customers, or a competitor's promotional rate if that's better than the new company's. There are only two outcomes: either they give me the promotional rate for 6 months to a year, or they let me cancel the service. And in the 5 years that I played this game with Comcast, they never let me cancel the service. They obviously put a note on my file after a few years that said "Don't f--- with this one" and they'd just cut right to offering me the promotional rate.

I don't miss that phone call since I cancelled my cable, but it works! I don't haggle with my cell phone company anymore since I get a great rate with a permanent discount, and haggling with the gas/electric/water companies is pointless.

Once a year I call and complain to our cable company that we are paying too much and need to cut back. I have been 100% successful every time I call. Now if only the cell phone company was the same way.
