I'm off to a cottage with a big group of friends (about 15 of us). I'm pretty excited. Apparently the cottage that we're going to is pretty incredible.

I worked extra hard earlier in the week so that I could leave work at 10:40 am today! hahaha ....getting my hair done (roots are awful) and then driving up to my bf's and then off to the cottage.....should be good.

We made about 60 cookies for everyone and 2 cakes (lemon poppy seed and a black russian). Funny part is, i can't even eat any of it with my lactose intollerance, and I really didn't feel like trying to find all the dairy free options at the store (they're usually there, but usually harder to find - speciality aisles etc).

Have a happy AND SAFE long weekend friends! see you on Tuesday :)

Mr macmtn will be up close and personal with his Squeezo strainer this weekend. Magnificent machine!
It will clean skins & seed from 20 lbs of tomatos in about 10 minutes.

I start, grow & pick the tomatos.
He-squeezes them, seasons and cooks the sauce down to his personal level of 'thick'. (usually cooking them down by half) then they get canned.
(I finally have him trained to can and process them also!)
My former city boy has come a long way baby!
So-this is how we are spending this holiday weekend.

Not a holiday. BUT ... my birthday!

Being the sort of planners that we are (as in "not planners"), Mr. RR found a darling cottage for rent on a farm with lamas and Icelandic ponies and chickens and such. Unavailable for the weekend that is the actual anniversary of my birth, but available the second weekend in September.

I'll take it!
My birthday is Labor Day too, RR! Whoo-hoo!!!

I don't really have any plans yet, although my barn owner said something about a cookout at the barn, so I might meander over there Monday if mr. tarragon doesn't come up with anything fun and exciting to do. I'm working all weekend and am currently on a 23 hour layover in exciting Akron, Ohio. Oh, the glamorous life of a flight attendant...

Wow!!! Ok, do you have to blanch them first? Or do you just chuck them in raw? I have tomatoes rotting in my garden because I can't bring myself to start canning in this heat! (mid-80s but will be 100F in my house if I fire up the canner!)

How much does the Squeezo cost? (If you don't mind me asking). I saw something like this in a magazine this year and it was over $200 so I wasn't sure it was worth it. Maybe if I used it a LOT, but I wasn't sure. I bought a food mill a few years ago thinking it was going to be great and it was the most useless machine I've ever used. I can't think of anything it would be useful for. :mallet:

Good for you for canning! I should be freezing pesto, too, but haven't started....have to do it soon because my basil is looking pretty ragged after the hurricane. Maybe tomorrow......

nope! No blanching. Wash, pluck off the stems, cut in half and smoosh down with the handy dandy wooden plug and pump the handle. Juice comes out the middle-seeds n skins out the front. Run the seeds n skins through twice to get all the juice.
Ya they can be pricey-but on Ebay-not so much. Most retailers get around $200.00 BUT-I have had mine for 15 years so the cost per year...pretty cheap. Do Not buy one with plastic parts. (You can use it for berries and other stuff also...there are different size screens for the machines) I actually have to race (beat him off with a mallet :mallet: ) Mr macmtn to the ripe tomatos so I can can some whole. I am not usually successful...but I can buy canned tomatos. I cannot buy his homemade spaghetti sauce..
We are going to try squash in it this year-I love squash soup.

Ebay Squeezo strainers

Did you lknow you can just freeze tomatos!??! wash, drop in to a freezer bag and hide in the deep recess of your freezer. Pull them out in , oh say-January when you really need a garden fix... :cheer:

Indy (the chestnut) was good for everything but his ears... he does halter and driving. The mare (don't remember her name) was super for everything. Last time we were out there we did a filly that tried to kill us even with plenty of drugs in her system. She was the worst horse we did all last season! These guys were a much better experience. ;) We did another pinto one too but didn't get pics of him.
