Echoing what jillincolorado said about shoes. I'm running in Sauconys right now too, though I don't remember the model offhand. They're for people who overpronate, which can cause problems with your knees. And since my knees are already prone to instability, I did not need a shoe that would exacerbate that!

Shoes for overpronators tend to have a good amount of arch support to keep your foot from falling in; this helps keep your lower leg in line and decreases the amount of torque on your knees. Running in the right shoes can make a big difference, though unfortunately I've never experienced "effortless" running ... :teehee: Which shoes were those, jilli?! I need several pairs! Do get new shoes about every 500 miles, even if your old ones still look OK.

The other thing I'll add about running is be careful of the footing. I run on asphalt because that's my closest option. I prefer trail running, but that's a 20-minute drive away, so that's not doable all the time. I don't like running on grass because it can be hard to see holes and ruts until you've stumbled over them, and that can cause injuries. I am a slow runner though (easily an 11-minute mile), so that helps somewhat alleviate the amount of concussion.

Also, if you're just starting out, no sprinting! Build up gradually and strengthen those tendons and ligaments over time. Sprinting when you aren't fit or aren't used to running can be very hard on your tendons, ligaments and joints when they are not conditioned, and that's another cause of injury. You may also want to avoid running down steep hills; momentum can be a real b*tch.

And only run with your dog if he/she is good about going in a straight line beside you while leashed. My one dog is a super running partner. The other one tries to take me out about every 100 yards because he saw or smelled something "exciting." :teehee:

I'm sure they'll make very nice walking/going to the store shoes. ;) But no, I would not run very far in $20 shoes.

There's a running shoe for every set of conditions, so yes, there are appropriate shoes for what you describe. The store will likely fit you in a trail running shoe, which has more traction and more durability/protection against rocks and other abrasive materials. A lot of trail running shoes also have better water resistance than the average street running or track running shoe, which you will appreciate on dewy or rainy days. There are also make trail running hybrids for people who run on some trails and some roads.

To be fair, if your footing is REALLY GOOD--like completely free of debris--there are people in the running world who would suggest that you run barefoot. But even those folks would say that in Michigan, you'd need what's called a "minimalist shoe" for cold/snowy weather.

So either way you're taking a trip to the running specialty store and shelling out $60-$120. It sounds like a lot, but if you run 10 miles a week or less, that's a whole year's worth of running for $5-$10 per month.

I just sent a request to join the FB group!

I started running again mid-June. I used to be a runner, then I mangled one of my knees in a crazy accident a few years ago not involving running or horses, and have not been able to run since. Every time I tried to go back to it the knee started screaming. I started back very carefully this time. I am almost 90 days back into it and am comfortable running 2.5 to 3.5 miles 4 to 5 times per week. I'm going slow, 10 minute miles, but the knee is happy and that is what counts now.

I would like to get some cross training in to work on my abs and upper arms as well. But for now I am just happy to be back running and not in pain. I second Jen, shoes are VERY important.

   good job everyone! I completed W1D2 today and felt great. Since I started running over a year ago, I have gone through two pair of Saucony running shoes and am now on my third pair. They are wonderful shoes and I will buy another pair when it is time.

I would love to do a 5k with the TOC team...

But please, PLEASE make sure you are running in the right shoes.

And come back and tell us what kind of shoe they put you in. Runners are big dorks about their shoes--I have literally had people jog up to me on the trail and say "Hey shoe buddy!" because they see we're both wearing the Saucony Grid Omni.

Done. I'm running in these little beauties:

Trail runners.

Edited to add: ooops, we didn't forget the nine-year old. He's running in Nike Air Kantara's

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/reviews/shoes/stability-shoes/nike-air-kantara/327.html

I strongly suspect that both of us will be "done" running once we've accomplished the 5k (assuming we get that far, of course :( ). He's just not that into it and while I like to run, biking and swimming are better for my conformation.

I changed the FB group to private. That way, anything you post there will only be seen by other members, not all your friends. Better that way.

You mean like my 11+ minute miles and my weight and that the computer program laughed at me when I talked back to it in bad cuss words when "Michael" said perkily "You are now halfway done!"

Shoes make or break my poor ankles. I CAN NOT run in Nike's. I had Saucony Omnis for a long time then went to get a new pair and the store didn't have them in my size so i decided to try on several different shoes and ended up in Brooks Glycerin 9. They are now my favorite running shoes ever. I'm a unique case because I supinate so bad from my crooked ankles as opposed to over pronate which is much much more common. The wrong shoes, even with just a little walking, and my ankles HURT!

You can try this: http://www.runnersworld.com/shoeadvisor

It's pretty good. Then order from Zappos. Mine will be here tomorrow. :woot:

Or try a sporting goods store that is smaller, if possible. We have Olympus (I think?) stores and their staff are really helpful. I went to Dick's once to try to find a specific shoe (had my print out from Runner's World and everything) and the guy WAS a dick. He told me that "Nike is the best you can buy" even though I had already said I tried them and didn't like them. Then he turned to the younger clerk boy and said "go get her the Nike Airs"...and walked away. I turned to him and said "if you do, I will walk out right now". And he was actually helpful and gave me another recommendation. But seriously....yuck!

We also have a store called "The Good Feet Store" or something like that, and they will actually watch you run and give you recommendations. I've never tried that.....personally, I'm afraid to do it. I trust myself because I know how it feels. I"m afraid they will give me something that "looks" like it *should* work and I'll cripple myself. :)

I wanted to bump this up for anyone that might not have seen it. Our facebook group is TOC - Couch to 5K. It's a fun group, I think we are doing a great job motivating each other and continuing our progress. This despite all of our other commitments, family, work, horses, etc... Everyone is just going at their own pace and doing great!
Anyway, if anyone else sees this and still wants to join, please do! Or if you want to join to cheer us on, we can always use some extra motivation!

See you on Facebook, TOC - Couch to 5K. :)
