Hi all, my daughter has fallen off quite alot in her little CO JR8, never really hitting her head per se, or very hard, but I'm wondering if I should replace it. Or can it be taken somewhere to see if it needs to be replaced or no? she fell off not once but FOUR times today, each time Mommy was cringing and I really need to make sure that helmet will hold up to a real head hit. Replace? or see if it can be looked at? It's about a year old. |

I'm not sure if there is anywhere you can take a helmet to be checked out for safety. Definitely a hard hit to the head requires a new helmet. And I believe the standard is to replace it every 5 years whether you've hit your head or not because the materials degrade over time (and probably also due to incidental helmet hits as well). I think in this case you might have to rely on Mommy Intuition on when to replace the helmet since she really hasn't taken a header but she's fallen quite a bit. |

yeah I'm going to get her a new one... it's also fitting a bit loose which tells me the padding has degraded a little. No HARD hits on the head, but definitley has hit her head on the ground and I am certainly on the err on the safety side. Thanks! |

When shopping, check inside the helmet for the manufacture date. Every Approved helmet has one. That is the date the five years starts from. If there is not a date, you don't want to buy the helmet, it is "only an item of apparel" like any other hat. I see LOTS of helmets for sale, but checking the dates, helmets are ALREADY over 5 years or almost 5 years old and would need quick replacing. You don't want to be buying those, with that plastic degrading at unknown rates. This is even if helmet has never been out of the box. Styrofoam linings designed to take the impact, develop micro-cracks, lose their crushability factor in protection. So in shopping, take EACH helmet out of box, bag, check the date inside the HELMET, not box. You want the longest protection for your money, date gives you that. A greatly reduced price for a helmet already a couple years old, could be a trade-off in purchasing. Ask the seller if they would do that, all they can do is say "no", so you shop elsewhere or find a newer made helmet in their stock. I like International helmets, because many models have the "twist to fit" adjustment knob to snug up the inside suspension. Helmet fits well if I have hair up or down, hat to keep ears warm, with a small knob turn. DD and I like the suspension inside, pretty comfortable and less hot with air around your skull. My work hardhat fits the same way, with head suspension harness inside, knob to set comfortable adjustment on skull. You want helmet snug enough it can't fall off when you lean over, chinstrap unfastened, shake head, helmet stays on. Of course you ride with chinstrap fastened, so a bump won't knock helmet off. Pony Club says kid's eyebrows should move up and down if helmet is gently rocked up and down on the child. You never buy a helmet for kid to "grow into", because it will not provide adequate protection with needed snug fit. Good shopping and check the inside Mfg. dates! |
