Because Dogs Are Not People.

Ooops, I said it.

And frankly you are trivializing racism but putting BSL on the same level. The fact that you would compare the "plight" of pitbulls to that of black males just BLOWS MY MIND.
I never said dogs were people. I'm the LAST person that'll say that. I treat my dogs like dogs, they aren't my kids, they aren't my equal, they are my dogs. Anyway.

Just calling it how I (and numerous others) see it. Just Google "BSL Racism" and you'll find thousands of sites. Here's a little blurb from one of the largest anti-BSL websites (this isn't just an anti-BSL for Pit Bulls site, btw) for you:

Quote:

BSL = Canine Racism

This argument has been shown to be successful in several BSL fights. Although some would argue that legislators simply don’t want to be considered racist, I’m not convinced that is why the argument is effective. Instead, I think it is an easy analogy that draws quick parallels between humans and canines when it comes to senseless, harmful prejudice.

This is also an opportunity to bring up minority crime statistics in relation to their percentage of the population, and to make suggestions that, according to the rationale used by BSL supporters, minorities are “born criminals.” It’s such a ludicrous concept that lawmakers should have no problem understanding your point. Nevertheless, this should be done delicately and with an abundance of sarcasm, which, unlike in a verbal forum, may not translate well in writing—so undertake this sort of argument with care, and make sure you have someone else read your writing before you send it.

And some definitions for you:
Quote:

Breed: (brEd) n. 1.a number of persons or things that are grouped together because they have something in common. 2.a number of persons of the same stock. 3.a Class or Kind. (a new breed of athlete).

Race: (rAs) n. 1.a breeding stock of animals. 2.a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock. 3.a class or kind of people unified by community of interests, habits, or characteristics. (The English race).

Racism: (rA-"si-z&m also -"shi-) n. 1.racial prejudice or discrimination. 2.the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races. 3.discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race. 4.Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Hmm..

I have seen a number of PB's that were way to aggressive toward humans - COMPLETELY UNPROVOKED! One you could not get near the owners vehicle it was riding in and the other attacked a dear friend of mine that had known the dog for well over 10 years and one day it just turned on her when she walked into the yard! They did not have the dog PTS but it did stay locked in a seperate room in the house for the remainder of its living years. It would even charge the fence line if you walked by! Burn me at the stake if you wish but Thank God that damn dog died just a short time ago!

Now see, that dog should've been euthanized. I have no issue euthanizing a dog that bites a human, none. If any of my dogs bit my unprovoked (there would have to be some extreme circumstance where I would "accept" a bite), they'd be on the way to the vet in a nanosecond.

Had to laugh at your Pug comment.. domesticated sloths :teehee:
LOL - yes, they sleep around 23 hours a day. They get up in the mornng, potty, go back to sleep when I leave for work. They wake up when I come home from work, potty, give kisses, and go back to sleep. Wake up on occassion to snag some kibble.

Oh, the life of a Pug....

While I am sorry I seem to have started this fight it is enlightening. If I had left the dog breed off my original post would it be any different. No! I don't care what kind of dog killed the woman. I care that any dog killed someone.

Get over it you guys. I am! And I love Wilson!

LOL. My dogs are similar, surprisingly. They sleep practically all day.. they'll get up and play if I ask them to, or if I take them to the park, but they are by far the laziest Terrier type dogs I have ever met!

Don't rehash Kady! We don't need to do that. I agree to disagree with you. It is an arguement we cannot win. Keep up your good work with pitts. They need all the help they can get!

I didn't know Google was the final authority on life.

I understand what "breedism" is but frankly putting it on the same level as racism is utterly ridiculous.

Do you know what it is like to have people refuse to let their children play with yours, because she is black? To live in a town where its residents vividly remember the days when blacks were not allowed within the town limits unless to work, and these same residents still cling to the belief system that African Americans are somehow a lesser race? How about having strangers come up and ask you if your child was a "crack baby" simply because she is black and adopted?

I don't think so!

When you do, then you can come back and tell me that Breedism and Racism are even comparable.

And anyone who thinks this stuff doesn't happen is delusional. We deal with it on a daily basis. It is so bad in fact that we have considered moving from the suburb we moved into just a year ago.

I'm sorry but this discussion was bad enough to start with, but it has clearly taken an utterly ridiculous turn.

I agree with you 100% FG, I am personally offended by anyone comparing racism in people to "breedism" in dogs. It is IMO what makes the advocates sound like loons. It is certainly not helping the cause, no matter what one might think.

I am sorry to say that there really is nowhere for you to go where the things you experience will be gone completely. A friend of mine married an African woman and has two gorgeous mixed race children, they run into issues in Brooklyn, and now in Berkeley, two places you would think would be the best places on earth to have a mixed race family. My husband had a Chinese mother and an English father, and growing up in the Bay Area people still thought she was his nanny. Racism exists everywhere, you cannot escape it. It is especially hard with mixed race families IMO, as the old ideas about "keeping to your own" come out.

Yeah, K you are absolutely right.... unfortunately it is just a fact of life. We knew that going in, but, you don't ever have the full picture until you are living it. I guess I just find it heartbreaking at times.... but I try to remember we are only 60 or so years out from the Civil Rights Movement, and over the next 60 years things will continue to improve (at least, that is my hope!)

I mean hell my husband has had some pretty bizarre/rude/mean things said to him, and he is white... but has a very thick, Northern English accent that people just do not understand. Cultural differences can present a challenge just like racial differences can. It's just that unfortunately our history as a country lends itself to pretty intense racial tension.

Not trying to be preachy or soapboxy but frankly comparing Breedism and Racism is like apple and oranges. And Kady the thing is I do understand where you are coming from, but using that kind of stuff to support your argument just dilutes it entirely.

Oh I wasn't trying to, I was just saying we've kind of gone over all of this before LOL.

I won't even comment on the BSL thing, it's clear that I won't get anywhere with anyone, but I will say one more thing on it. BSL doesn't just affect the "bad" owners, BSL affects EVERYONE. My dogs would be killed just as quickly as any other dog if BSL came around and I chose to stay put (which I obviously wouldn't).
