Would you care if someone used pictures of your horse (and sometimes with your kids in the picture) for ads on Craigslist?

Hard to imagine my very unworldly mare would be so popular in print, but both my trainer and a photographer have used pictures of her in their ads for services.....

I'm not sure whether to be flattered or annoyed....in both cases I would have agreed to let them use her if they had asked. I do sort of bristle at the use of her in an ad for "horse training" since she wasn't actually trained by my trainer.....

Anyway, I'm not going to say anything, but I'm wondering what other people think. Personally, in both cases, *I* would have asked for permission to use the picture if I were the professional. Even if it wasn't necessary. It's a little freaky to see pictures of your horse or kids (or both) on Craigslist if you don't know it's there..........

People should ABSOLUTELY ask, especially when there are kids involved.

I'd ask for them to be removed, but that's just me.

Here's the link to the ad:

http://albany.craigslist.org/grd/2548630805.html

2nd picture down is my daughter and my mare from last year's county fair.

I did actually buy the picture.....I really don't mind it being used, but it's surprising to find it on CL. This one and a few others are used on her FB page, including a headshot of my younger dd.

:sigh: I know this photographer, and I like her and her work....I didn't realize she was advertising with my kids (since last August) so I feel like it's a little late to complain now. I wonder if photographers often just take pictures of random kids though. It IS a public place.

It's tricky.... I guess as a photographer, she owns the copyright on the photos. BUT it is not like you contracted her to take them, she was just taking them randomly, correct?

Frankly as a creative professional myself, I would never use a photo of a kid without a parent's permission, but that's just me.

I have pictures of my pony mare being used in current ads. Doesn't bother me any because I am using some of Hunter's old photos for his current advertisements. Plus I was kind of lucky to get that shot of the little mare so I'm not worried.

TBF, if they are going to use images of your children in advertising, the photographer has to ask your permission. Did you sign a release when you either (a) bought the photos or (b) did the sitting?

If not, the your photographer falls into the "unprofessional" category. If you did not sign anything, then I'd send them a polite email telling them that you don't remember signing a release that allows them to use photos of your children and would they please remove any images containing your family from their advertising?

As for the trainer, I'd do the same. I'd send a chatty email telling her you are concerned about your privacy, you don't remember giving permission to use your horse's image in her advertising and you'd really appreciate it if she would take down those photos.

The add is now flagged for removal.

While I probably would be flattered with someone using a photo of my horse, my kids (imaginary at this point) is a different thing. I would like someone to ask permission. Even at that, I wouldn't feel comfortable having them up on Craigslist where there are a lot of wierdos.

I would think at very least that it is professional courtesy to ask to use the photos....

No, nothing signed. Actually, now that I remember correctly, it was the trainer that bought the pictures anyway. Yes....definitely unprofessional in my opinion. Especially because I would have been willing to let that picture be used....

Interestingly, this photographer has been retained by our trainer to take pictures at the 4H show/county fair later this week....so I imagine we will have to discuss this again....grrr...
