My only child JRT will be ten in December. He has only known the south, and has lived the 7 years on this farm. He stays here with the property owners and their chocolate lab (his best friend) when I travel . Wondering if it will rock his world too much to move somewhere so different or whether I should see if he can stay here. Pros of taking him....less fleas (I hope), less heat, we will still have each other Cons are very cold weather and no built in doggie care for when I travel to judge etc.. and what if he and the 2 farms dogs don't get along??? |

Well, again, this is a pretty personal decision. I would want to bring him just because I'd miss him if I didn't....obviously making sure he fits in is critical though. I would not worry about the cold weather...that would be my least worry. And then you can buy these:

If he doesn't end up liking it up there, you can probably "send him back". We drive from CT to Virginia semi-regularly, so I could get him that far for you if he needed to "phone home"

Bring him! My sweet oliver is not a terrier by any means, but I suspect that yours would have a similar reaction to him. I had to leave him for my first year of college and he was not a happy camper. It was tough to find student housing that allowed a dog, but doggie babysitting is never hard to come by if they are friendly and well behaved. Henry, the great dane, on the other hand...wouldn't wish him on anyone that I liked just yet! |

You gotta bring him. How could you leave him behind? I couldn't. If it doesn't work out RH will take him home! JMHO! |

so I think I will ask my current BO to take him back for me if he hated it up there, and see how it goes. I have travelled so much in the last six months that he has stayed at their house more than mine! |

I agree with the others, take him and if he hates it, he can always come home, but I couldn't leave him after ten years without trying it out!

Agree, take him. Just be sure to make his transition as smooth as possible, try to stick with your same routine during your packing, and right after you move and be sure he has some of his usual comforts (bed, blanket, whatever he usually plays with, etc.). Here's a good article about moving with pets, http://www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=122http://www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=122 |
