So..... I'm trying to decide on my next mini-trip and I've decided that since I've just bought a house, my next few trips will be more conservative and will likely be to different destinations around the USA. I've always had a bit of a fascination with the Southern States - particularly - Alabama, Georgia, Tennesee (sp?), and some of the 'Middle' states like Kansas and Nebraska. I'll probably ask more state-specific questions down the track, but I'm thinking of going for a long-weekend to Nebraska just to check it out. Has anyone ever been? I know its not exactly where you'd think of as an 'exciting' destination, but I just love the idea of seeing smaller cities with (crossed fingers) nice people .... Thoughts/ opinions/ warnings/ recommendations???? Do we have any TOC'ers from there? Thanks |

I've been to every state in the USA (except Hawaii). With all respect to Nebraska, I suggest visiting a different location! There's a lot to do in the South. Alabama has great beaches. Louisiana has a LOT to see. Florida - away from the masses - is interesting (I grew up on the edge of a swamp on Merritt Island). Georgia has endless sites. Mississippi I found depressing. Allegiant Air is a good place to start! Cheap (but limited flights)! |

hahaha BH! Hmmmm...I may have to pick your brain about some of the other places. We have a long weekend in September i'm thinking of using for a quick trip,....so there really isn't anything at all to see there? What about like a barn dance or a college football game? haha - is that being a bit stereotypical? |

My first reaction to your question is, good Gd, why would you want to spend a weekend in Nebraska?? That truly would be a looooooong long weekend. Granted I've only ever driven through it, but that was one hell of a long, boring corn-filled state to drive through. I can't think of anything exciting that one would do there. As for the states you've mentioned, Tennessee is gorgeous in the mountains, Georgia is nice, and I've heard good things about Alabama. Truly the middle states just aren't all that thrilling. I grew up in Indiana, and while I love it there and hope to return one day, I'm not sure it's a state I'd send a tourist to...the slogan "there's more than corn in Indiana" is only slightly true. Indianapolis has some good museums and of course the track, but I don't know if you could spend more than a day or two without completely running out of things to do. Northern Indiana has the Amish and if you want college football in a pretty setting there's Notre Dame, but that's about it. And Southern Indiana has....um...corn and soy beans. And hogs. And militias. |

I 2nd the Nebraska not being a vac cay spot. Go to Indiana. Notre football is a spectator sport. On campus is wonderful. Amish country is so charming. Plus you could spend some time in Chicago! |

Hey wait a minute you guys! If our dear Aston wants to immerse herself in a bit of Americana what better place than America's Heartland! I think Nebraska is a big college football state. The only thing I know about football is that a group of really large boys lope back and forth across a perfectly good carriage driving field trying to get a funny shaped ball across a goal line.... but.... I think... they are very enthusiastic about it in Nebraska! There has got to be some fun (if you are in to that sort of thing) activities surrounding a college football game! |

CDE Thanks for the support! hahaha. I know i know, my reaction from everone i've asked has been 'you wanna go WHERE?!' But I kind of like the idea of going and finding fun in the places that most people overlook. I understand that sometimes there is a reason, but I'm sure I could find it if I looked - Maybe just not by September long weekend. I'd like to do Montanna as well, and have some good girlfriends there who would show me around. THe problem is that where they live, the return flights are close to 1000 dollars and that is a bit pricey for me at the moment - closing on a house, expenses related to that.....bla bla. I haven't even priced Nebraska, so it could all very likely be close to that and therefore not something I'll do, but I figured there has to be fun in every state! haha. No on on here from there? I'd love to see Indiana as well... I love football and missed the real 'American' football when I was in Australia. I did watch AFL and rugby but its just not the same in my opinion. |

Arkansas is BEAUTIFUL, and I'm not just saying that because I'm from there. Stick to the north/northwest parts of the state and there's rivers, parks, etc. And you haven't lived until you've yelled PIIIIIG SOOOOIIIIEEEE at the top of your lungs at a football game. My grandma lives in Mountain View (home of the Ozark Folk Center which has lots of cool pioneer type stuff to do/see) and is really near Blanchard Springs Caverns. My uncle has a place not far from there on the river, he does a lot of trout fishing. My cousin lives over in Fayettville and went to UofA. I grew up in Little Rock - lots of the normal city type of things to do there. You can fly into LR and basically everything is within a 2 hour drive.

After some thought, I suggest a couple of days at the Iowa State Fair (it's in August, I know not when). I went years ago and it was HUGE. So "American!" Any midwest state fair is worth a trip. Texas has the biggest (in the whole USA if I recall correctly). My dad came from Terre Haute, Indiana. He always said "who in their right mind would GO to Indiana, not go AWAY?" Every state has it's own tourism site. Happy travelling. |

This is because Terre Haute smells gross. Thanks to the paper pulp plant, you can smell Terre Haute before you see it. |

This looks promising for you AM! Not only will Roy Roger's (stuffed) Trigger be making an appearance, but there is an Aussie-themed kids area! Plus state fairs bring the opportunity to try gluttonous American cuisine like fried Twinkies, fried Kool-Aid, and whatever the hell else someone decides to dip in batter and deep fry. |

My favorite is the "Tempura Vegetables." Soak some veggies in way-too-much batter, drop them in a vat of hot oil and voila! And of course, God put Funnel Cakes on earth to tempt Adam & Eve. The apple story is a farce Look what I found: http://www.iowastatefair.org/ The Nebraska state fair was held in June http://www.mnstatefair.org/ http://www.sdstatefair.com/ These are always cool horse-related events to watch (if you like heavy horses): http://www.naclassicseries.com/aboutus.html |

LOL Nebraska...well I've been to Omaha and few times - former employer had an office there. Omaha itself is actually a nice little city, but outside the city, geesh I just don't know what you'd do with yourself??? How about Idaho? Boise is a beautiful town and there's alot to do in the area, you can also take a trip to Yellowstone park. My father in law lives there and we love to visit. Ghost towns being one of our favorite things to visit
