I have had horses for 35 yrs. I have breed, trained, and boarded horses for 18 yrs. I know horses will be fine when they are away from their herd for the first time. Buttttttttttttt I moved my baby this weekend and he is with out his herd for the first time in his life and living in his own feild/pen with no other horse. There are horses right across the fence from him but if they go out to grass he can't see them.

I feel bad and worry about him. When I went to see him last night he was down in the trees and none of the other horses where around.

So is it bothering him? IS he neighing? If not, no worries. Some horses like to be alone.

I agree! If he is not upset then he is OK!

He's just trying to get used to the change, and it sounds like he's fine. Maybe just knowing the other horses are around is enough for him, and you don't have to worry about the herd drama right now, so stop worrying. He's probably happier with the situation than you are.

I bet he'll be fine. And it might be good for him to learn how to manage life on his own without buddies in case he ever has to be somewhere by himself totally.

Well it's not going so well. He was a total stress ball and dripping wet when I stopped at the farm tonight. He is going to go out with the other horse tomorrow. They are being good across the fence and the herd is a laid back one so I think things will be fine. I will turn him out in the morning after he has had his morning feed.

Can you put one horse from the herd in with him for a few days? If all goes well after three or four days, then add another, then next week they all go out with the herd. That is usually the best way to introduce a horse to a new herd.

MissBri has it right - into the newbie to one at a time is easiest on all.
