We adopted Pico from the shelter in 2005 and he's been the best little buddy that anyone could ask for. For giggles we did a doggy DNA test on him and it came back Miniature Schnauzer (which was already obvious to us) and Cocker Spaniel (which totally makes sense based on his ears and his coat). He would follow us everywhere and loved to be with us. I always felt like he was looking out for me - if I was up in the barn doing chores, then he was sitting at the barn doors, looking out and keeping watch. He loved to get in the farm truck with Mr. Fishy and take the garbage out or run to the hardware store. He taught Buffy and Willow how to be good guard dogs, too. He slept in bed with us every night and was the best sleeper - no fussing, no wiggling around, just out like a light. He's great with the cats and horses, too. Last spring they lymph nodes under his jaw were swollen. Vet took multiple biopsies but they came back inconclusive. She put him on Prednisone and the lumps quickly went away so we took him off of it after a few weeks. This summer the lumps came back. Just a couple weeks ago we started him on the Prednisone, and since then he's just gone rapidly downhill. He had already lost most of his hearing, and his eyes had been a bit cloudy for a while, and he had lost some weight, but he was hanging in there and was really happy. Just the past two days have been the worst and last night we decided it is time. In the middle of the night he wanted to go out for a potty so we let him out and fell back asleep. Usually he comes back quickly and we wake up to let him in. I awoke a little while later and realized he hadn't come back so I got the flashlight and went looking for him. He was just in the yard, but he was just lying there. He didn't (and wouldn't) get up, and so I picked him up myself and brought him back to bed. His breathing is labored and the look in my eye tells me he is pretty much gone. His movement is uncoordinated and he shakes a lot. When Mr. Fishy let the dogs out this morning to pee, he just went to the pasture on the other side of the pond and laid there. He never does that, he's always active and running around. We're waiting for the vet's office to open in 30 minutes to take him in for an emergency appointment to be PTS. We learned from Toopy dog to let them go when it is their time, not ours (we waited too long with Toopy). It was just so sudden, it seems like, I don't want him to go. |

Oh Fishy, my heart is breaking for you. We lost our oldest dog last spring and it was just so hard to let him go. But, like you, we just couldn't put him through any more distress waiting to see if something would change. Sending huge hugs to you and Mr. Fishy. Even though you have other animals, I know every one of them takes up a big space in your heart that will be empty for some time. So sad for you and little Pico.
