Cottage or cabin rentals near DC/MD/VA; within 2 hours or so?

So DH and I will be celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary this September 30th and would like to go somewhere nice but relatively inexpensive for a nice weekend away. So, I'm thinking close by for a few days. Anyone have any ideas? We went to St. Michael's one year, but I'd like to try and go somewhere a little different, ideally VA, but not set on that idea. I guess it could be PA too for that matter.

I'm thinking a cottage or cabin rental would be nice.

Thanks!

There are so many nice bed and breakfasts in Middleburg. Plus, you can go to the wineries during the day! (My fave).

I think Middleburg would still be expensive. Try further out like Winchester, White Post, down near the Homestead or Greenbriar does cheap rentals during the non-snow season and it's a lovely area, we've taken our bikes. Charlestown WV (not Charleston) is also REALLy close and a lot of cute areas through there. There's one in particular, but I can't remember the name.

Check out the VA state park's website-- there are a few places that offer cabin rentals. I'm not too far from Bear Creek Lake State Park (sort of near Richmond) and I've heard that their new cabins are really nice and really inexpensive. Agree w/RH on the Greenbrier too-- they now have tours of the underground bunker-- I REALLY want to go see that for some strange reason!!!

Check out those discount/coupon websites like Groupon. Sometimes they have deals for getaways.

I stay at The Middleburg Country Inn during Upperville and I don't find it crazy expensive. I know you said cottage or cabin but if you were leaning toward Middleburg it's an option.

Also, check out Vacation Rental By Owner or Home Away. I've done a number of rentals through them and have yet to be disappointed. In fact, I rented our apartment in Paris from VRBO and it was wonderful.

It's in MD rather than VA, but I've heard that Deep Creek Lake is nice, and it's only a couple of hours away. Mr. D and I also spent a lovely weekend at the Savage River Lodge out in Garrett County, MD. Not cheap, but not crazy expensive. You rent an individual cabin and either eat at the lodge or strike out on your own. The lodge restaurant is good and its bar is even better. ;) It's pet friendly so you can bring the dogs if you want (we did), and it's in the middle of a really pretty state park. They leave a basket of fresh muffins, dog biscuits and the paper on your cabin porch every morning. Lots of hiking, fly fishing, etc. And Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water is relatively close, if you're into checking out that sort of thing. We went there in the winter to go snow shoeing, but I bet it's lovely in the fall.

Not at all close, but I got a great house
I found the house I wanted and told the realtor I only wanted it for a portion of the required week. I ended up paying less than half the original cost. The realtor called the owner to see if he/she would take less, and I'd already decided I would not pay more.
Worth negotiating!!!
Around half of the houses nearby appeared to be empty. So, if you make a lowball offer, you might be suprised...
