Here's a thought: naters, would it help if WE made lists of stuff we had to donate and sent you those lists? That might take the pressure off you to remember everything you need, which I'm sure is very overwhelming.

You guys made me cry when I logged back in. I am blessd to be a member of the TOC family for sure.

I promise I wasn't trying to whine, its just so disheartening to try to explain to the insurance adjuster that I started off years and years ago with all the bottom line stuff, and slowly (through clearance sales, trading, working over time) finally had all of the nice stuff. My Walsh halters, TWO edgewood bridles I never got to show in, ten beautiful leather halters I got for a song when a store closed, 4 wilkers pads that I designed and then had to figure out how to pay for them). It just sucks, and they don't and can't understand why this "stuff" is so important. Beyond all the coats and show boots and tack, what really sucked was going to reach for his feet to pick them out and have no damn hoof pick.

I've never been rich, I had to always budget and save, and buy on clearance. The tack inventory in my trailer had quadruplets of every item for each horse (mine, my moms 2, and my sisters). In order to go to a show, we just had to load the horses and maybe a saddle. I had back ups to my back ups.

When a high end tack shop closed, I went nuts with my overtime hours so I could buy all sorts of stuff.

Custom grand prix boots that I could never afford new, I got a like-new pair off of the board from a wonderful lady who was moving overseas and thinning out gear.

Got a gorgeous couple of coats from here. Beautiful show shirts.

I mourn the stuff, but am so thankful our horses made it, but so sad that Madeline didn't. It was horrible.

The insurance adjuster keeps telling me they will help with what I can invoice, but how many times did I save up and buy something nice at a horse show and paid with cash?

Plus the adjuster doesn't get it that nice strap goods don't depreciate. I can't purchase two new edgewood bridles today for what I got them for 2 years ago (on clearance).

Thanks for letting me vent.

The barn is in Sanford NC

My address is

Amy Dorney
7102 Yardley Ct
Fayetteville NC 28303

Your kindness is greatly appreciated, but please don't feel pressured to send anything - it is most valuable just being able to talk freely here.

If its ok, anything that does get sent I would love your permission to share with the other family there (my mother/sisternaters have known them for 16 years now, and although they lost Madeline, they still have two others to care for)

My mom's / my / my sisters / the other boarder horses are all geldings and typically standard "horse" size things like fly masks, etc.

The family that lost their horse also has one other standard horse size horse, but they also have a HUGE percheron mare (who loves her butt to be scratched - will up load the pic of my mother scratching that horses butt at a later time).

List of what you guys normally travel with would be amazing - my main task is trying to remember what I had in the trailer, barn, etc

I just now saw this-- so sorry!

I'd try to push back a little more with insurance. Three Decembers ago my parents' garage flooded due to a water pipe burst. Unfortunatly I had quite a bit of tack and horse things still there, including three body clippers, several other clippers, and my show boots. I didn't have to provide my actual invoices for the items from time of sale, but something to prove value (so links to the items on websites). They then went into my list and depreciated the items. I pushed back when they were only giving me $200 for my show boots, etc. They said they would give me full price for them if I bought new ones and provided a receipt, which they did make good on. They know people tend to collect the insurance money and not replace items, so showing them I really was going to replace the items in the end got me more money.

Ditto what ImJumpin said. My husband had a similar experience when his parents' house burned down. He made an Excel spreadsheet of everything he owned and a replacement value. The insurance company then calculated depreciated value and cut him a check.

SO SORRY to hear about this...

I agree PUSH for your items....they are the ones that don't want to pay....have them talk to other horsey people and they will realize that most of us have MULTIPLES of the same item....

How about your medicines???? and your first aid kit...Don't forget them..

naters, there was a thread on COTH not too long ago like "what is your packing list for shows" or something like that-- maybe that would help you?

I'll dig thru my extra stuff and see if there's anything useful I can send your way. Heck, if y'all can't use it you could sell it and get something you DO need. Off the top of my head I know I have some saddle pads and some SMB type boots, I'm sure I can come up with more. Will try to look this weekend and send you a box.

This blows.

You folks are amazing. I am sure everyone would be glad to return items that anyone would want back. Your kindness is amazing. Someone came out to the barn yesterday and put up a post in concrete (seems random I know, but to be able to tie the horses and hose them off is invaluable in this heat). Thank you random post person. They apparently came while we all had gotten off the farm for a bit.
