Won for Me
Is the meadow on fire?

I bought my desktop 4 years ago and it died this week. I was able to have someone save all the photos, music, etc. which was good. I have a laptop for work that is usually with me 24/7. I have some personal stuff on my work laptop, but very little. I do not have iTunes on the work computer and I need iTunes.

I really want an iPad for when I travel, but would have to have iTunes downloaded somewhere to support the iPad. Computer IT person said some people do download iTunes to their work computer...he said he has it on his work computer. I never read a policy for what can be downloaded and what can't, but obviously it would not be encouraged.

So, I either need a new home laptop and will wait on the iPad. Or move forward with the iPad and download iTunes on the work laptop (which, again, is attached to me 24/7).

Anyone have a great laptop they love? Anyone have an iPad and likes or dislikes it?

I have my laptop, an iphone, a blackberry, and ipad and am about to get my playbook. I am geeked out. So here is my take on all of it:

1. LOVE my laptop. It is my work laptop and I have my itunes account active on it and my ipad and iphone. I try and synch all three once a week -- especially when I get a bit nutty with books and stuff.

2. I am okay with the ipad. There are a lot of apps for it -- all that you have to pay for -- very few free that I like. I dont like the whole flash issue with ipad, and I am learning to love reading on it. I use it when I travel so I can watch movies or read my book, and I love that I have about 200 books there right now, all queued up and ready to read. What I dont like is that I do not have access to my work email on it, but at the end of the day the blackberry and playbook will be for work.

For the money, I think a laptop is still a good deal. You can always get an ipad later, but they are not the same as a laptop computer. If you wanted to combine the best of both worlds, go for a mac air or another mac product. Our VP of sales has an air and he loves it. If I had my choice, I would do that, but our IT department won't support more apple products.

Wow! Great info LD! That was exactly what I needed to hear! I also have an iPhone and iPod. I can sync my work email so the iPad will be helpful, but you are right, it isn't a laptop. I like the idea of reading on it...lately, I haven't been able to finish a book and I think it is because I can't see anymore. :innocent:

Tell me about the Playbook...

iTunes bogs down your computer. I cant imagine any business would want it on their computer.

We all have itunes on our computers here. I listen to jazz while I work to drown out the noise from all of my co-workers (open environment)

I'm going to age that if you want the functionality of a computer get a laptop. I adore my Motorola Xoom but still need my laptop. I don't really use iTunes anymore so I cant tell you about that on a tablet but I have been way happy with Amazon for downloading music, though I do like some if the iTunes features better. Will iTunes run on an external hard drive for your laptop? Then you could get the hard drive and an ipad

This is why I went with the Macbook Air. Most of the advantages of the iPad, yet I can still carry my "real" laptop with me. I'm at an academic conference with it right now and it is the best!

^^^ Yup. This is exactly what I would do if I were to do it over again, no ipad, no playbook, just the Air and an ipod.

I refuse to even consider an iPad.. you pay all that money for them AND you have to pay a monthly fee to use them?! No thank you.

I'd just get a laptop if I were you, BF has a Macbook Pro and loves it. I have the iMac and will never have a PC again. Love love love my Apple stuff!

You only need to pay the monthly fees on the iPad if you want Internet access all the time. I have an iPhone so no need for that. I can use the Internet at home and place like Panera. My husband also has an iPad for work but he some little thing like a wireless card that allows him to access the Internet when needed without paying the monthly service fees.

I mean, if you don't have the internet 24/7 on one, what's the point of spending all that money to basically have an over sized iPhone? I really don't understand the hoopla about them.

I have an iPad and I love it. It is really more of a toy than a computer for me. I love it when I travel. So easy to download books and I have ideas of watching movies on it too. I do not like the no flash, but it is great for sufing besides that. I have no interest in reading a book or watching a movie or even doing much surfing on my iPhone. The screen is just too small.

To me, my iPad is very different than my iPhone. I have the ability to use my iPad without wifi, but have rarely done that. Most of the time wifi is available and don't you need wifi if you have a notebook?

We also got an iPad for my 79 year old mother and she loves it. Easy to use and very convenient. Not really a work device, but fun to have.

I have both the iPad and a Macbook. As I am not big on apps (which is funny since my dh is making them) so all I really use it for is reading (Kindle.) I LOVE my Macbook!
