Just heard from my vet, the joint showed absolutely no laxity, so no tear!!! She had both the other vets in the practice look at it too, both agreed. His films looked good, (she said his hips looked excellent BTW!) so most likely we're just looking at a sprain or strain. I'm so relieved!!! I was so worried, I couldn't imagine trying to keep him crated and immobile for weeks/months after surgery, and I was so bummed thinking that his whole various show careers would be over. I'm off to go pick up my boy!

Glad to hear that!!!! However PLEASE forgive the mother hen in me.... Strains and sprains take a LONG time to fully heal though the dog will look better, he may not be. PLEASE allow more time than you think you need to rest him. Wasn't he sore a few weeks ago? I have a friend with an agility dog who is developing chronic problems because she never lets him heal. My horse took 6 months but was sound at the end of the first month of rest (I had to check him and see) and Teddi was sore early in Nov, and I laid up until Jan early and she has been fine (knock on wood). I am SO glad it is not his CCL, that would have been the end of his conformation life. Young dogs are so hard on their bodies. Good luck keeping him quiet. Ann |

Got here late, but so glad to hear the news is good for Logan! He must have been having a good ol' time to have strained something enough to look like a CCL injury tho!! |

Excellent news!!!! Keep him relatively quiet for the time being -- hard, yes, but not as hard as crate rest! Maybe just leash walks for a while....? So glad they've ruled out a tear....definitely not something you want to have to deal with if you don't have to!!

You can't possibly be more of a mother hen than me, Ann- please don't apologize for any advice! This is actually the same issue as the intermittent lameness from a couple of weeks ago. At that time my vet recommended a conservative approach of rest, pain meds and wait and see if it improved before we went though sedation for x-rays. While he's slightly improved he's still NQR, so today they sedated him to thoroughly check it out. Our treatment plan is rest (hopefully just in the house when supervised, in the crate if he doesn't co-operate but he's usually pretty quiet inside) with leash walks for at least the next 4 weeks and Metacam for 2 weeks. I had my vet run a tick panel to rule out Lyme or any other of the tick-borne diseases and he did have a slightly elevated titre for Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever, not high enough to be considered active but just in case that could be causing it we're are going to hit him with a course of Doxy. He's also going to get a series of laser therapy treatments that will hopefully help him out. Any therapy suggestions for now or later would be appreciated. Logan has actually been pretty good about the reduced activity so far, however mr.tarragon has not- he's just been opening the door and letting him run about willy-nilly. I came home earlier in the week and found them out in the back yard, Logan running around like a lunatic chasing squirrels. mr tarragon is now under threat of severe extreme pain and I actually think Logan will go stay with my trainer if I have to be gone for more than a few hours. Dogs are so much easier to train than husbands |

Tarragon, so happy for your good news! If you don't mind, can you tell me what were the symptoms? I have been having a tough time getting a diagnosis on my lab's recent ouchy. So much so, that I can't even tell which leg it is -- great horsewoman, eh? Harder to tell lameness on a dog than a horse I think... |

Big Day, a couple of weeks ago he was on/off lame. Sometimes he'd hop up after lying down and be three-legged lame for a few steps. When I gaited him he was a little short on his left hind but fully weight bearing. I took him to my vet and she wasn't able to find anything obvious, nothing swollen, sore, etc. According to my vet, intermittent lameness, especially after first getting up, is often typical of CCL tears or hip problems. She did range of motion tests that pretty much ruled out hip issues, and she said that he wasn't showing the toe-touching stance or gait that's really typical of cruciate ligament tears, so it could be a slight tear or strain or just a soft tissue injury. She suggested trying rest and pain meds for a couple of weeks to see if he improved, and if not they could sedate him, take x-rays and do other tests to find out what was going on. |
