Interesting thread. I've had two "flouncers." Both announced very melodramatically that they were leave FB forevah! One came back pretty quick. The other is still gone, although I haven't checked to see if I just got unfriended. :teehee:

I think Indy's advice is quite good. Take a few minutes and sort through the privacy options FB gives you. Knock the crazees off your feed and keep the people you enjoy. And if it is still not working for you, give yourself a three day moratorium. You'll know if you really want to get back to it.

FB for me right now is a way to stay connected with the world. My friend base here in Brno is quite small, and not at all like the very deep, personal friendships that developed over my three years in Nanjing. My husband travels quite a bit, and although I would never say I was lonely (I am way too much of an introspect to ever feel *lonely!* :teehee: ), there are times when I long for adult conversation.

The connections I make on FB and here are important to me. I need some stability somewhere and, as sad as this may sound, I do use the internet as a way to make sure get grown up conversation when I have spent a few days pretty much on my own with the kidlets.
I'm with you on all this RR......

I've reconnected with some amazing friends via FB, and am able to stay in touch with so many great, fun, interesting people via the site. I don't think I can or will go off it completely. I think what I will do is get more familiar with the way things are shared, what information I am receiving, and edit down my friends list.

I know if I were to hop off completely I'll miss out on my TOC friends, a lot of local horse stuff, many playgroup connections, and various other "real life" social events and friendships that have evolved as a result of FB.

But man there are just so many over-sharers out there in FB land. (and like I said, I probably overshare a lot here on TOC, and I apologize for that! oops!)

HA this is exactly what is going on in my FB world.... but it seems like it is constant one-up-manship. Like one person posts about how amazingly hot and super their partner is with hearts and "love you babe" and all that stuff and then not long after I see someone else (we are all mutual friends) post similar... and I'm just like... ok enough!

Ironically the two who do it the most are the two whose relationships are highly questionable. It is like professing their constant and undying love for their partners on FB somehow validates the relationship.
The two people I know on facebook that were the worst offenders are currently both going through a divorce now. One was last year, and the best part was Friday night was full of lovey-dovey pictures and I love you's....Saturday morning he woke up and informed her he would not be returning from his golf game.

The other one happened this month, another Saturday morning see-ya!

I clean out my friend's list monthly, hide all games and applications, and ignore meaningless drivel. I also defriend'ed a couple of my right-wing nutjob Jesus freak cousins that kept telling me I was going to hell.

I tell everyone I need a 12 step program for FB! I am addicted!

It is a very good little lie detector as people seem to forget what they tell you in person and then go home and post the direct opposite on their FB! It also gives you alot of insight into what people are "really like". I have a "friend" on there that posts some really disturbing comments on support groups pages! He's turned into a real Nut-Job!

Wow I guess most of my FB friends are boring. :teehee: As with most of you, I do like FB for keeping up with friends and family, etc. I like hearing what is going on in the life of people I care about. I don't mind when people post personal stuff that we would want to know about to support that person (having surgery, really sick and just need some sympathy), but no I don't need every gory detail. And luckily none of my friends are too gushy.

Likewise, I try not to post things that don't need to be aired publicly. I try to only post positive things about my hubby (of course he IS perfect though :teehee: ), accomplishments or funny things my kids do, or just normal stuff.

But if I had friends like you posting all that stuff on their statuses, I'd probably be doing some hiding. :innocent:

I'm friends with.. 213 people.. and I think I probably have 100 of them "hidden" from my news feed LOL, if that says anything. I pretty much only post about my dogs.. and I try not to do more than one status update a day. I just hide people that bug me, and periodically go through my friends list and delete people that I never talk to anymore.

Frankly I LOVE the dog/horse updates, and a lot of the kid ones too, but dude there is just some stuff that should not be put out there. At least not all the time! Like I don't need to know about the hemorrhoid you just got or see the CT scan of your chest! And that's great if your boyfriend is stud muffin! I don't mind hearing about it like.... once a month maybe... but the rest of the time, no thanks.

Anyway hope I didn't offend by ranting away about this today. I was just knocked over the edge by another "miss you babe even though I just saw you omg I will not live the next 10 minutes until I see you again" update and wanted to :mallet:

^^ This is how I TRY to manage FB. Seems to work most of the time.

I currently have a "friend" on FB who, after having played out her divorce on FB over the last year, has now met someone new and is spewing the developing (and quite sexual apparently) relationship on FB. Where her teenage daughter can see everything. :o

She's next to go...

Flashy I'm with you 100% and I don't see your posts here as oversharing in the least. Hugs, girlie. Wishing your grey skies to blue very soon. :luck:

Most of my FB friends are on the boring side (except BT.......all that gushing over Finn ;) ) But I have one friend I have only not "unfriended" because she is a constant reminder of how I never want to be. :teehee: She's a superficial, shallow, new money show-off, just looking to impress people. It's all I can do not to respond to her posts with things like "oh shut UP already!" :sigh: I'm unfriending her soon.....I think I've learned enough.

I have two friends hidden and I'm going to cut them loose soon. Both of them just never stop updating...all day long. :mallet: Funny sometimes, but 12 status updates in a day is enough to make me hate them.

My new stance on FB friends is that I feel no sympathy and just don't bother accepting friend invitations. I have one from someone I knew in high school.....we were never friends. I am not interested in being her FB friend, and I'm not going to feel guilty about it.

So there. :)

I'm still not on FB and don't plan to be. I think this would drive me nuts! I think if I were on FB I would have very few friends...my BS tolerance level is very low and I think people know that about me and so steer clear! At least IRL anyway. Or maybe I'm just a bitch... ;)
