That's really just sucky, jilli :sigh: I'm so sorry you're having to deal with that.

I mean, I can overlook some things in a boarding barn, but lack of water is never, ever, ever, ever, did I say EVER? acceptable, and if the manager is going to blow you off on such basic concerns as water and hay I'd really think things like blanketing, ring footing, turnout, worming schedules, etc are going to be ignored so I'd question the entire quality of care all together. Is there an owner you can speak to, or is the manager pretty much it?

:jaw: :jaw: :jaw: Wowzers! What an unbelievable situation! Have you talked with your new Friesian friends? How is the care their horses receive?

What does your boarding contract say? Not that you can use it to change the idiots that think the care they are providing is okay, but if they are in violation of it they can't demand 30 days notice of you leaving. And at this point I wouldn't give notice you are leaving, I would just find a place and skedaddle out of there! Although it's a terrible thought her care may suffer further if you do give notice.

That is terribly disappointing. I guess honesty in business is a lost concept to some people. I agree with others on here that an immediate move is definitely warranted. I can't imagine what would happen if you gave notice and waited 30 days, since she's not getting the basics now. If you need a truck and trailer plus some help I'm sure someone on here will step in.

 JIT, that sucks!!! I'd def. be looking for a new place too. In the meantime, can you tip the barn workers and talk to them to make sure she has water/hay? I mean, I dunno about you but I'm not above bribery if it'd get her needs met until you can move. Also, I'd look into ways to encourage her to use the waterer... I think I remember a thread on TOB about that???

I'm gonna re-read this thread in January when I'm hating having the horses at home ;) Seriously, the winters suck when you're taking care of them yourself but I DON'T miss the PIA aspect of boarding at all. Hope you can find a good place soon. Around here some of the barns that look the best "on paper" are among the worst in care.

Hay and water are pretty basic needs - and pretty easy to provide. The BM at your current place was formerly the BM at a big facility here in my area. The customers didn't like him and it sounds like the same deal as you are getting, he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

I'm fortunate in that I've only ever dealt with one crappy boarding situation in all of my years of boarding. Every place else the care was exactly as I was told up front. It may not have always been exactly how *I* would have done things but there were no surprises. At least it sounds like things have improved a bit. Like I said, hay and water are pretty basic things when it comes to horse care, and it always surprises me that some barns actually seem to struggle to provide them.
Interesting onethebit. I wondered if you knew him because he mentioned he was from your area. KMD feels like we were "sold" and one of the other trainers here has mentioned that they really sell you before you move in, then it just all falls apart. :argh:

This is how I feel. Just TELL me what you will and won't do and I will either deal with it or leave. It's the fact that he's LYING to me or just not bothering to find out if they are...in fact...giving her water and hay. With the water I guess he assumes that if she gets thirsty enough, she will drink from the auto waterer. She seems to not like the sound it makes.

As far as the hay, she does get hay at night (to some degree). They just seem to FORGET her entirely most mornings, which makes me wonder what ELSE they are forgetting. They have also forgotten to put her out at the beginning, which I thought was just part of the "adjustment".

It's just so friggin frustrating. Today we had HAY, SHAVINGS...but no water. KMD said, "Well I guess they will give her water later" to which I responded, "yes, and I won't sleep tonight worrying about it"...so we did them ourselves. BTW, the "friesian" crowd is mostly in the big, heated barn. They are more visible and the one friesian that is in my barn has absent owners. I have only seen them maybe twice since I have moved there. I think that's typical of the majority of the people. They only come out every so often, and then just to ride. Most are also first-time owners. The only other people who are really POed are the trainers who are there all. the. time. like moi. If I only came out once a week, I probably wouldn't notice either and just assume that she had already eaten all of her hay and that they would fill her water when they cleaned the stalls (which is what the BM says...but it never happens).

I talked to a gal today who boards at a local "cowboy" barn (referral from KMD's fantastic boss!!). She has been at the same place for eight years, but she says it's CLEAN, and they maintain a great routine and ALWAYS have fresh, clean water. When the front came through the other day (the one where MY barn didn't blanket or shut the door) her manager called to tell her that her horse was freezing, and wanted to know if he could blanket him. He lives outside with only a run. It has an indoor, some turnout, and CLEAN stalls with runs and it's HALF the price or less and five minutes from me. I passed it up originally because I didn't think they had an indoor so I may go and check it out this next week. It might be a good alternative until we figure out where we are going to live.

*le sigh* Thanks for all the support! I wasn't going to say anything, because I was just so disgusted by it all. :spew:

I did try paying the groom's daughter but she did cover it either! But one should not have to rely on a 12 year old for their horses water! Can you use a big container? Say a garbage can?

Wow, What a shame, All the talk that Manager gave you when you were hunting for a barn. People sure can talk the talk, but never deliver. Sooo sorry.
You just never know. As everyone said, Keep looking. My god, what a shitty attitude.. Look for a better barn he says?? Gee I thought You were the way you sold it to me when I was looking.
Man Jaci, It is not like you are not paying through the teeth. How very dissaspointing. I am so sorry. :(

I wish there was a better business bureau for barns or a consumer reports on barns. It sure would make things a lot easier.

Or Angies List. I wonder if that is not something horse folk should start doing.
I think you can put any kind of business on there. It sure would help us horsey types.
And you can post good barns there too. Something to look into!
