OK. Admission time. :innocent:

For all my life until recently I was very negative about "Country" music. I adore music in general and love many kinds...classical, jazz, folk, disco, pop standards, big band, etc, etc, etc. But I always said I "hated" Country & Western.

WELLLLLLLLLLLLLll, about 6 months ago a new radio station came on the air and I can receive it out here in the boonies and tripped over it by accident one day (heard a cute cool song and stuck around to hear it all)...we are in a mountain range and so many other stations get bounced out of our area and I was intrigued by this "new" station I can receive.

Anyway, eventually I just kept on listening...the lyrics really are what have hooked me. Love songs!!! Songs of patriotism. Songs about everyday REAL life issues, trial, tribulations and celebrations. Funny songs. Sad songs, philosophical songs, songs about doing what I'm doing: living on the ranchette. Songs about horses and dogs and best friends.

I found out where the HEART of music has gone to and where the lyricists who can speak to the heart and soul of the listener reside. Please...I mean no disrespect to anyone here who enjoys hip hop or rap or gangster rap or heavy metal...but honestly, those just do NOT speak to me. I dislike the anger and hatred of women especially that I hear in the rap/hip hop music. The lack of melody and heart bothers me in heavy metal music (as well as anger). So, as those just took over the airways in the 90's or so, I just quit even trying to listen to music on the "usual" stations and became a lover of "the oldies" I guess.

So, here I am finding myself actually receiving my family heritage without planning on it! I live on a rural area ranchette, have multiple horses and now ride Western on my little cowpony mare and am grooving on Country & Western music...my homesteading, cattle and quarter horse ranching grandparents would be proud to know I am! :teehee: ;)

AT any rate, any other converts or long time listeners? Favorites of performers, writers, songs?

Country music fan here. It's funny because I rarely listen to anything else (except when kids are blaring hip/hop stuff in my car) which is ironic since I worked in the music biz for years - mostly rock, alternative, and big hair bands. I prefer the newer artists - The Band Perry, Zac Brown, Miranda Lambert, etc. though I will listen to most of it so long as it isn't too hokey. So many of the new songs are well written and there isn't a lot of other genres these days that really focus on good singers. That said, I will never give up my Aerosmith albums....

I will admit i love it.

The guy on american idol that sounds like randy travis is amazing!

I pretty much love everything. My favourite is Kenny Chesney, but he sits beside Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, and Guns and Roses/ Aerosmith as my fave bands. Oh and COLDPLAY. they're the ultimate. So my mix is ecclectic to say the least.

Oh, believe me, I've not given up my jazz or rock bands whatsoever! I guess I'm just chagrined I blew it off all these years and now find I super enjoy it! Cool that there are fans here! ;)

Country music is my life... I can't really say much else! I am country as country can be. I grew up on southern rock and country.

Miranda Lambert is my all time favorite. I've been pretty much obsessed with her since her Nashville Star days. I like most modern country, except the real popish stuff. Nothing against pop, but certain songs/artists should be on pop radio, not country. I love the classic stuff, too.

Taylor Swift is a great writer but a terrible vocalist. I can only take her in small doses. Same with Kenny Chesney, I only like his early stuff. Garth is God. George Strait is the king. Our wedding song will be a Keith Urban song.

I also sing and write songs for fun.

What'd I tell ya, country is my life. LOL

By the way, all of my friends and family listen to and love country music. It's much more popular now than in previous years. Nothing to be ashamed of!!

Have you heard Trace Adkins "Songs about Me"? Your life sounds like the song, and anyone who can listen to "Arlington" by Trace and not cry is a lot tougher than I am (it's about Arlington Cemetery). I love Trace Adkins, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Ronnie Dunn's new album comes out soon, Brad Paisley's This is Country Music launches the 23rd of May (and if my UPS guy doesn't get it here on the 23rd he's in big trouble). Reba McEntire, Barbara Mandrell (don't think she performs any longer but her greatest hits CD is classic), Joe Nichols, Darryl Worley, Phil Vassar, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton (I want to go home [or something like that] is great. I love Don Williams too, and early Johnny Lee (right after Urban Cowboy) are good too. Martina McBride and a lot of the other ladies are heavily into ballads and story songs too.

I thought I died and went to heaven when I moved here (Columbus Ga/Phenix City AL area) and can get 6 stations-every single button (depending on which side of the hill I'm on) is Country. I can get one with Rick and Bubba in the mornings too. You'll be shocked at how many artists cross over into rap and hip hop type songs too. And some are so rock it's funny.

I can't believe I forgot Garth Brooks and George Strait! Garth has basically been gone for 10 years or so and they still play him constantly, and George Strait is so wonderful, and a really great person from what I hear.

I don't know a lot about country music, but living near Nashville...(you get the idea.) Anyhow, this link is to a video done by the daughter of a friend of mine. Please listen to it, and pass it along if you like it. I thought it was pretty good, and the young lady's attitude is fantastic. Thanks!

Hahaaaa...I'm not really a fan of country music, but I will say that my favorite band is so because of their heart...and they lean a little to the country side of the pop/adult alt./rock ledger.

pony4me, I listened to your friend's daughter's song. I liked her little presentation. :D

I listen to a bit of everything and quite a bit of country. I like all the ones already mentioned and also love Jason Aldean. There are a LOT of good new country artists out there.

Gunnar waving like mad! I am a country fan! For most of my life! My family hates it! Got to see Hank jr in the 70s! I love Trace and Toby. You are right about Garth and George!

Enjoy the music! Watch for Scotty Mcreery! He will be a star!

I am New England born & raised but very much country in my upbringing. My father was a square dance caller in the 60's. Every saturday night he would load up the station wagon and we all headed off for one dance hall or another. I knew the words to every c/w song while growing up..both the songwriters words AND the square dance calls to the same tune. (There would be NO BEATLES music played in my dad's house :soapbox: EVER)
Now in my late 50's I listen to a wide range of music-but can still pull up the words to any of the music from my misspent youth. (I had it made-being the caller's daughter-never sat out a dance and got my pick of the airmen at the local Airforce base dances.. :teehee: )

It's pretty much all I listen to. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of a lot of the mainstream Nashville country, some of it is just too cheesy or too annoying for me. I am digging the new Keith Urban song though, so sweet, and Blake Shelton's new one. I usually like Dierks Bentley, and my guilty pleasure is anything Taylor Swift but I usually don't admit that in public. ;)

In general I prefer what here is known as "Texas Country". It's a little more gritty. Zac Brown Band was part of that scene before they went big with Chicken Fried. My favorite favorite favorite is Randy Rogers Band. They have the most amazing fiddle player I've ever seen in my life. I like Wade Bowen a lot too. If you prefer a more rock/pop sound Eli Young Band is a great one, or for a more bluesy sound try Stoney LaRue.

My favorite artist ever is Clay Walker but I much prefer his 90's stuff. And there will always be a special place in my heart for Chris Ledoux.
