I need a rug for under my dining room table. The table is roughly 4x9 so I think the minimum rug size should be 8x13. It's a farm table with black legs and black chairs, slightly distressed. I'm thinking an oriental or persian look but in a flatter weave. I'm guessing a thick pile could be a problem with the dining chairs. I figure this rug will take some abuse so if I don't spend a ton on it, I won't feel bad throwing it away in a few years. Overstock.com seems to have large selection but I'm leery of buying online when I haven't seen the colors in person. Also Homedecorators.com has some cheap ones. I like this one but it's a foot too short. http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3806360 Any suggestions? Edited by Sparky Boy, May 13 2011, 08:06 AM.

We got two at Lowe's recently. They were both under $100, flat sort of weave as you described. We didn't want anything cushy as kids like to grind crud into them and we also didn't want to spend a lot as they will get trashed!! I can't remember exact dimensions but about 5 x 8 or so? We've gotten a lot of compliments on them. |

I looked at lowes last night. Only a few rugs could be special ordered over 8x10 and I didn't love them. But I did notice they were flatter, like I wanted. I also checked Home Goods. All 8x10 as well. I think they are hit or miss, like TJ Maxx. |

Do you have an Ollie's near you? They have tons of cheap rugs. Are there any consignment furniture places nearby? I refuse to spend a ton on rugs since we have dogs and live on a farm (read: lots of dirt/mud/hair). You pretty much get what you pay for at Ollie's quality-wise but they look fine. I got a really, really nice Karastan for our living room that's huge (I think 10' x 14' or 12' by 16'?) and I paid $200 for it at an estate auction. It cost me as much to have it cleaned as what I paid for it. Then I found another nice oriental at an estate sale about a year later for $60, I think it's an 8' by 10', may be bigger, for our den. It was rolled up and still had the tags on it from the cleaners. I know it cost them more than $60 to have it cleaned! I've also seen good deals on orientals on our local craigslist as well, but haven't bought any from there. So, as a rug bargain hunter, those are my tips for you!!!

We got our dining room rug at Home Depot. It was under $100 too which was super nice. |

They have some really nice ones at Costco I keep meaning to go buy (now that winter is over). They are the same price as the cheap Chinese crap you will find at Target and the like, but they are GOOD quality and best of all made in the USA. They are a perfect pile for under a table or a house with a lot of traffic. |

Forgot to add, if there's a Capel store nearby, sometimes they have good sales too. |

http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Bijar_Area_Rug/150/#BVRRWidgetID I just ordered the door mat size of this one. If I like it, I'll order the largest one. Hope I like it.

How much time and patience do you have? There's freecycle (which I have not used in five years, so I *assume* there is still freecycle ), there's craigs list and, of course, estate sales. I am all about old stuff, so I'd prefer a rug that has a few ghosts over something from Lowes. But, that's a personal thing.

I've known a couple of people to get a great price from overstock.com on area rugs....and they were delivered quickly and cheaply and were true to the images online. |

Don't forget Walmart (and I don't know if Sam's Club sells rugs), and some Flea Markets have rug sellers too. I would also hit the big neighborhood type yard sales. You might even try places like Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift store-some businesses donate new items to them for the tax break. If you could go bigger than 8 x 10 then Lowes or Home Depot might have bigger, and definitely go there often so you see what is on sale, but still on the regular area rug racks, and in the clearance section. A friend bought several big rugs from Lowes, and she's been very happy with the look, and the durability. And especially go to the garage sales in the older part of town, since many people downsize and get rid of everything. And there are people who totally redecorate and almost give things away, so you might get lucky. |
