Thanks for all of the suggestions. I really don't know where I want to go. I love the beach but I just don't know thats where I want to go. I was thinking probably some where Europe but then I think maybe South America. I always wanted to go to Africa on a safari but I really don't like flying and thats so far away. I figure at least europe I can fly to ny and then onto where ever and it won't be so bad. I think the top two things as of right now would be backpacking in europe that way I'd see so much or going somewhere in the mediterranean. I really don't know. I have no clue if I would go this year or next but I just feel like i need to go somewhere and possibly somewhere I never in a million years would think that i would go or would have been able to go. |

My favorite place on earth is Scotland. I was lucky enough to live in St Andrews and travel extensively around the UK and Ireland while I lived there, Scotland was a fantastic place to travel alone. I absolutely loved the highlands and the Isle of Skye. I was not as fond of Ireland, I was a little disappointed by the touristy nature of the whole island after the more isolated and rugged Scotland. I did not do a tour (they didn't really exist back in the 1990s!), but these hostels are wonderful http://macbackpackers.com/ I also stayed in this hostel for a while, which is WAY north, and I spent a couple days just hiking on my own http://www.syha.org.uk/hostels/highlands/carbisdale_castle.aspx If I could go somewhere I have not been? Probably Australia or Greece, although I don't think I would go to Greece anytime soon. |

I went to Tikal in Guatemala and absolutely loved it! Incredible to see and lots of bird life and monkey. I would go back to Guatemala in a heartbeat. I have heard the colonial towns are just incredible. You could combine Guatemala with Cancun and get beach time in too. In Europe, my latest idea is to go to Venice and Slovenia. They are not that far apart and Slovenia looks amazing. Take a look at Slovenia. We did a river cruise a couple of years ago with my mother. Loved Budapest and Prague was nice. I actually liked Budapest better than Prague. Stopped in Vienna and other small towns on the Danube and that was nice too. (Unfortunately, we all got a stomach virus on that trip and that put a damper on things.) I would like to go to Scotland also. We toured around parts of England and had a wonderful time. Cambridge, Newmarket, the Cotswalds, and Winchester. Great vacation. If you are going in the summer, look at Canada too. Wonderful places to go in Canada. We spent a week in Nova Scotia and thought that was great too. Lots and lots to do there. We also did a Star Clippers cruise in the Carribbean and Dominica was one of my favorites. Parts of Pirates of the Carribbean were filmed there and scenery is spectacular. Very low key too. Think about what you want to accomplish on your vacation and then options will narrow down. |

And in Anguilla too. Whitest sand I've ever walked on (Anguilla). Blackest sand was on Martinique. And pinkest was on one of The Bahamas (I forget which) Dominica has wicked whale watching. I sailed right by a huge sperm whale. We could almost reach out and touch her! |

Love Ireland, had the best meal in my life at the Palace Hotel in Cork, and I've eaten at all of NY and Los Angeles' best resturants. Loved Western Ireland. Didn't get to go riding while there, but it is on my list. I also love Positano in Italy. Such a cool town. You can easily get to Pompey from there when you are tired of the cool rocky beach. I'm a history buff, so I love everything about Italy. |

Ditto this! Mr. FG is from Northern England and his best friend lives in Edinburgh. What a cool city, and Scotland is absolutely stunning. If I could spend a large amount of time visiting anywhere in the world it would be there. |

Where is Mr FG from? I lived in Cheshire for a while, right outside Manchester, and some of my closest friends are from the North. I LOVE Manchester and the surrounding area. I also love York and have probably been there a dozen times. My DHs family on his father's side is also from the Manchester area. It's an under rated area! |

You're kidding! He's from Preston, just north of Manchester. It's not a big town but it's neat, everything you need is walkable or a short bus ride away. The surrounding rural areas are pretty and it is just a quick ride down to Manchester. His aunt has a cottage in the Yorkshire dales and it is some of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. I love it there. How long were you in the UK? All my time in the UK has been spent in northern England or Scotland, haven't even made it down south. Hubby is not big on the touristy stuff hence why I've missed out on both London and Ireland thus far!! Can't complain though, Scotland is truly beautiful and I have some great memories of staying with friends on a large farm outside Dundee and of New Year's in Edinburgh! We used to spend a lot of time in the UK before we had kids and real jobs. He still goes back regularly but I've not been in several years. I can't wait till the kids are old enough to go and truly appreciate the culture and the scenery. |

I lived in St Andrews for the year at Uni (1995-1996), then in a little town called Little Leigh near Northwich for a summer. My husband's family is originally from Stockport which is just south of Manchester, and they now live in Bramhall. I spent many holidays in Swinton, which is just North of Manchester with my bestfriend over there. I used to go back every year to see my boyfriend, then to just visit friends, then with my current husband to visit friends and family, but like you we don't get back very often anymore with life/jobs/the cost. I am supposed to go toy friend's wedding in Buxton July 2nd but I am starting to fear I wont make it ![]() Anyway, the North of England and Scotland feel more like home than home does. |
