How long can you go and how far are you willing to travel? Some of my favorite places in the world are far away from North America: NZ: Two months driving around New Zealand would clear anyone's soul. You can see a lot in two weeks; but I'd stay south and spend as much time as you can south of Christ Church. I have a friend down there I could hook you up with. And, NICE to go somewhere where you can speak the language if you are going to spend some time there. Cambodia: Siem Reap, Angkor Wat in Cambodia are incredible, and one can easily spend a couple of weeks traveling in that area: the western coast of Cambodia has some interesting areas (Kep), Phenom Phen is quite interesting, and from Cambodia you can easily go to Vietnam. Pho Quoc is really peaceful. Thailand: The islands are amazing, there are some quite lovely quiet ones, and the Full Moon Festival on Pho Phangan is quite a ripping event if you are into serious (really serious) partying. Chaing Mai up north is very interesting and you can spend a week at an elephant rescue. That could be healing. Australia, of course. Great Barrier Reef if you are a diver; although don't spend a week on a boat. Even people who love diving get bored. Mongolia: You can spend a couple of weeks touring around the country. We did it in vans, sleeping in gers every night. You can ride, too. RNB has a friend who did a couple of month long ride in Mongolia. Amazing country, gorgeous, rugged and rough. The downside is that the country is so huge you spend a lot of time traveling. Or, you can work out a tour where you don't, but you need to really think about what you want. Agrotourism in Italy. Stay on rural farms and let the farmers wives cook for you and drink local wine straight from the tap ( ). You will think you died and went to heaven. Places I haven't been that are high on my list: Machu Picchu in Peru. I have never been to South America, but we are saving that part of the world for when we are based in North America. Giza, although that's probably not a good idea right now. Galapagos Islands; I believe you have to do this as a tour and we are simply not good tour people. Iceland: riding pony tour of the hot springs. How fabulous to spend the day on an Icelandic Pony and the evenings soaking in natural hot springs?? Greece: who in the heck wouldn't want to go to Greece?? Seriously. Scandinavia during the summer: peaceful, peaceful hiking India: while we are generally not into "luxury travel," there are some fancy schmancy trains that take foreigners around India wining and dining them. This would totally be my gig in India. I confess that as much as I want to see the country, it's intimidating. We're going to the French Alps this summer to ski with some friends on the glaciers there, and then heading to Ireland for a family reunion. I've never been to Ireland, so I'm pretty excited about that (particularly given the irony that I travel on an Irish passport and have never actually set foot on my home soil ). |

What is your goal in the vacation? Get away from everyone and everything? Be pampered? Experience new culture? See architecture/museums? I think different places work for different vacations. However, I want to go to Africa. I read about travel there. I read novels set in Africa. I read books about the history. So if I were planning a vacation right now and had the financial resources, I would be heading to Africa. |

I want to travel with RR! I agree with DD -- it depends on your goals. FWIW, I don't do "rugged" living conditions anymore. I have to have some sort of indoor plumbing and washing facilities and cannot and WILL NOT sleep on the ground anymore. I dont care if I have interwebs all of the time, but I do need some time to plug back into the world every so often. I also need good food -- not haute cuisine -- but good stick to my ribs food. And of course, my personal safety comes first and foremost. And I am also too old to stay in youth hostels anymore. So knowing those parameters, I will be happy to go anywhere in the world, anytime. I do like the idea of NZ for a couple of months. |

Ireland. The North or the Republic. No where better. In the US, I would say Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are my favorites. In the Caribbean, I'd go back to Bequia or Dominica. Not much to do, which is just right for me. If I could go anywhere in the world - I'd do an around the world freighter trip for a year. Just to see the oceans (the ports would probably stink). |

agree that it depends on what you like and what you want, but there are two places in the world that I always said I need to go back: Belize: we stayed at the Hidden Valley Inn in the Cayo district and it was literally paradise. Entirely remote, but with lots of adventure tours, like tubing, hiking, going to Guatemala to explore Mayan ruins. Then we went to Ambergris Caye to lie on the beach. Heaven. Ravello, Italy: we went to Italy on our honeymoon and unfortunately while we saw alot of the country, we didn't get to really "stay" in one place very long. Our favorite, hands down, was the Amalfi coast. We stayed in Ravello and it was just drop dead gorgeous. Stayed at the Villa Maria inn http://www.villamaria.it/ . I need to go back and spend a week or a summer there. Edited by MayaTy02, May 12 2011, 05:04 AM.

If I could go anywhere in the world, I'd go to Tuscany, Provence or Santorini. I'm a hopeless romantic. |

I would go hunting in Ireland. But that's me. I have a burning desire to do that, as well as to visit Scotland, and see New Zealand (after the Lord of the Ring movies, that scenery looked amazing, and there must be something really good about it to get Greg Best to move there, right?)Mr. SSR was born in Poland, and I would like to see it, as well as visit Prague. I have been, and LOVED, the Isle of Capri and Sorrento in Italy. The Mediterranean is so nice and warm. I also love England (as a whole) and of course, PARIS. I could also do a nice sailing vacation in the Caribbean or Mediterranean. |

Our default vacation is Hawaii and we go every year. We're way past the stage of doing "fun touristy" things - we sit by the pool and listen to the waves and eat papaya off the tree and read and chill out. My favorite non-American place to go for vacation is Ireland. I've been three times now and just love it. The scenery, the people, the beer, the countryside, the B&Bs....love Ireland! |

The Amalfi Coast is one of my favoirte places ever! I want to do the Piedmont Region in the fall and go truffle "hunting". Last year when I was researching it I found a company that will take you "hunting" for the day and then you have a cooking lesson where you use your truffles. It sounds so wonderful. We have a wedding in Ireland in June so we are doing a week in Ireland (where I'm going to take falconry lessons!) and then a week in Paris. I've been to both but not in the summer so I'm super excited. Mr JM has never been to Ireland so I think he's looking forward to that even though most of his time will be taken up with the bridal party. |

"...anywhere..." Truthfully. I would go to space (anywhere, right?). Ever since I saw photos from Gemini, Apollo, and all of the NASA flights, I would spend my twenty million on a few laps around mother earth. She is a beautiful place.

Ireland is at the top of my list right now. I've always dreamed of going riding in Ireland. Depending on how other things pan out, we may go there next fall for a football game and the trade off for me is that we'll go riding too. Of places I've been, Prague, Salzburg, and St. Petersburg are at the top of my list. |
