AHH this is so nerve wracking. He got a few hives on his face this afternoon and now his cheeks are bright red and hot so I've given him some BEnadryl. I'm looking at everything skeptically, wondering what it may be.... He's always had a sensitive stomach so when I was nursing exclusively I had to cut out dairy, chocolate, green vegetables and eggs. He's never been able to tolerate regular formula and has had to be on hypoallergenic formula that has broken down proteins. Since he's been on solid food I've been introducing things slowly and only giving him whole foods, which is easy cause he loves fruits and veggies. I cook most of his food separate and he gets all organic. I keep wondering if dairy or eggs is the culprit..... maybe it is just a combination of things. Perhaps a food intolerance coupled with seasonal allergies (this year is killer for pollen and other things.) We had mold in our old house, a nasty surprise we found in our attic that apparently had been missed by the inspector. I was always a relatively healthy person until we moved into that house-- I ended up with chronic strep, respiratory infections, major GI issues, and several miscarriages. I'm not saying the mold did all that but it definitely triggered something in my immune system to go kind of haywire. Anyway once we found it we had it treated ($$$) and then immediately put the house up for sale with full disclosure. It took almost a year but it sold, though we took a massive loss. So now you see why I was so gun shy about any odd issues while we were looking at real estate. This house was inspected to the hilt and we have a clear trail of ownership and know everything about it, so there are no surprises. Regardless we are going to have the duct work cleaned. There's hardwood in the majority of the house, and I'm careful about using any kind of chemical cleaners and things when I clean. And as you guys know our doggy went to live with a friend about 6 months ago. My car has a bunch of horse stuff in it (the irony if he were allergic to horses...!) so hubby's going to take it all out and store it and have the car detailed just in case. UGGH I never wanted to be one of "those" neurotic moms but I feel like one right now!! Thanks for all the thoughtful responses and ideas, you guys are always so good like that..... |

I would put hardwoods in his room and maybe the hallway outside too. Or if you don't want to do hardwoods you could use vinyl plank-I know it sounds awful, but it looks great, is waterproof, looks just like wood, and is an easy installation. Don't buy the cheapest vinyl plank either. Google "vinyl plank floor pictures" and you'll see it is really great looking, very durable, easy to clean, and I'm probably going to get it when I replace the kitchen/dining and both bath floors when they wear out. It's also very nice to stand on too, it's not echo-y the way hardwoods are. You could probably do his room, the hallways, and anything with vinyl now including installation for less than hardwoods would cost for just his room. Make sure they don't spray a bunch of air freshener in the car after they detail it-many times they do and don't ask first. It could be lactose intolerance, or similar to that because when he had antibiotics they can kill off the bacteria in the intestinal tract that help digest milk products. And there are certain kinds of mold that can cause exactly what you suffered in the old house. Many years ago in the stone age when I was a baby my mother bought a cheap teddy bear, and I promptly broke out in hives and a rash. Apparently some substances are very irritating, and also they can have strange materials in stuffing too. Did your baby get any new toys or stuffed animals? Especially about the time this started? Definitely keep him away from anything except poly fill items, and plain cotton bedding and blankets-and always wash anything first before he touches it. Actually I never wear any new clothes that are washable with out running them through the washer first, because they use all kinds of odd chemicals as finishes on clothing and especially bedding. I always set my washer up to rinse the entire load an additional time, and I use the least amount of soap that gets the clothes clean so I don't end up with too much soap that doesn't come out. And I don't use liquid fabric softener, but use the Bounce unscented and hypoallergenic dryer sheets, because I got sick of playing hunt the sock forever after drying laundry. Sheesh Flashie...I think with foaming mouth and inability to breathe I would be a nervous Mommy too! GIve yourself a break. What you are dealing with is FRIGHTENING, especially on top of the ordeal with Kenna. I'm surprised you're not COMPLETELY GRAY (or platinum as KMD says) and totally neurotic by this point!! hang in there hon!! FWIW my asthma is triggered by allergies. If I sneeze, I almost ALWAYS have an attack. Yes, I am allergic to horses...and hay...and grass...and dogs...and cats... lol |

Me too. I also think something like asthma could be at the root of things, along with allergies. I'd also look into the GI issues such as celiac. I'm no expert though. I was also told by my allergist that a person can have x times exposure to something they are allergic to, and have no reaction. Only when the body has had enough exposure, on that next time, you will get a reaction. And each reaction can be worse until steps are taken to either desensitize or avoid the allergen. The big trick, of course, is figuring out what thing or things is causing it. I will definitely keep you and your family in my prayers for an answer soon.

Stephjm has echoed my concerns about celiac or other digestive issues...do bring that up to the doc. Also, though kind of uncommon to show so seriously in a child it can happen...ask the doc about Rosacea...those "hives" on his face could be a reaction to the sun? And, as the sufferer of it, I hesitate to even bring this up, but also the facial things and severe reactions might also indicate lupus. Likely not but something to put at the bottom of the list...lupus symptoms do include a "mask" across the face (hence the lupus=wolf due to the mask looking like a wolf mask) and the mask is often red with bumps (called hepatiformia). Anyway, leave no stone unturned! LIKELY it is some kind of severe allergy to something that you have yet to isolate and figure out. Really sorry you and the FG's all are going through all of this! |

If he turns out to have allergies there are immediate steps that don't cost too much. If he's allergic to dust and you need to get rid of the rug, then rip it up including the closet, and take up the tack strips, and get a bunch of cheap sheet vinyl remnants at Lowes (they keep them in the back behind where the cheap sheet vinyl rolls are). And no more curtains, but solid blinds you can dust easily. Eventually, you may want to invest in a whole house HEPA or other special filters, but that is a last resort. If there's a humidifier attachment on your current furnace make sure that isn't putting out fibers from the baffles in it, or that it doesn't have mold spreading from it though the entire duct system. And he could have hives from the meds he's on, that made him react to sunlight-you could be right on the sun exposure causing the hives. Hopefully, the reaction he's having now is the combination of his original flare up and the medications, but either way I hope you find the answer soon, and it's something manageable. I hope he's doing better and the allergists get moving on isolating what's making him sick. |

Hey guys, thanks for all the awesome feedback and suggestions. We are looking at everything right now wondering what the heck the culprit could be. I'll be honest I'll be super relieved when we have the testing and they say "oh it's an X allergy...." We had a very long appointment with the ped yesterday. At this point they are sending him for a load of bloodwork and also of course the allergy testing. They are still on the fence about whether it is a true allergy, hereditary angioedema, or some other auto immune response. The additional bloodwork should clear that up. His allergy testing is next Tuesday so we're just trying to sit tight until then. No new foods, no going outside, just staying quiet per the doc's instructions. The gastro issues are intense as well and have gotten worse since all this stuff has been going on. The doc doesn't seem to know if those are allergy related or not. Colton does have a sacral dimple and I'm wondering if we should have that ultrasounded. I know most of the time they are completely benign but sometimes they can be indicative of neuro or intestinal issues. Regardless, I've cut dairy out of his diet completely because I've had my suspicions all along that dairy didn't agree with him. When I was nursing full time I cut it out also and it seemed to help some of his colic issues. I'm kind of a basket case this week, not gonna lie..... I will be very relieved when we have the allergy testing and get to the bottom of this. My imagination is wandering away with me and I'm terrified he has something more than just an allergy going on, which is irrational, but I can't help it. Having been through two major, life threatening situations with both my kids now in the last 7 months has put me on edge. I keep wondering if I've missed some kind of red flag over the last year that I should have seen. Mommy guilt I suppose. I also HATE HATE HATE that he has to undergo anything, even a blood draw, that might make him upset.
