Hey guys.... I'm trying not to be a nervous mommy. He had an ok day yesterday but a horrific night last night and is still NQR this morning. It's weird he has these episodes at night that seem to precede the reactions, and then they continue on after the reaction for awhile too. He gets the sweats, flings himself around, isn't really awake but fussing/crying/screaming for hours.

The ped had sent him for an abdominal ultrasound after the first reaction to see if there was anything unusual going on but it was thankfully ok. Actually these weird things have been happening on and off for about 6 months, I thought they were night terrors but now I'm not so sure. We always chalked it up to teething or a cold or whatever. The ped kept telling me to try sleep training but I don't think it is a behavioral issue. Maybe it is part of an allergy. Who knows. I don't like to see him in distress though. Hopefully it will resolve once we find out what is triggering him.

I'm trying not to panic but my mommy radar is on alert. I feel like I'm very sensitive to shifts in my kids' well being, maybe it is all the years I've spent with horses and dogs and working at the vet clinic.

Anyway thanks for checking in guys. I'm hoping the ped has some insight on Monday. Maybe I'm just impatient but christ almighty I feel like people are dragging their feet.

wow flashie, that is so scary. My son had a night terror a couple of days ago and it was very scary...his heart was pounding through his chest, he was trembling all over and mumbling, crying, screaming. Fortunately it only lasted about 15 mins, I can't imagine dealing with it all night. So sorry and hoping you get answers really soon

Wow. That is interesting, Flashie (from a medical standpoint...sorry!). Any chance that it's asthma along with the allergies? I had horrible asthma as a kid (still have it) that would cause me night terrors and panic. Just throwing it out there.

I hope you have some answers soon!

Hi Flashie -- just checking in this morning to say HOWDY to the FG gang.

My son had the same symptoms Jilli describes from the time he was one until about 6. He never slept through the night, but never really woke up either. He had horrible asthma and was allergic to a host of things. We knew what the worst offenders were and kept him away from those -- almonds were really bad -- and dealt with the rest. When it all started -- about the same age as Baby C, the doctors did want to do allergy tests because of his age so I kept a detailed daily diary and included everything like weather, if the neighboring farmer cut hay that day, if his dad cut the lawn and so on and everything he did, ate, when he napped etc. I was looking for a pattern and the hidden culprit, which we never found.

He did grow out of the worst of it by the time he was 6, but I was still very aware of what he ate and what he did because there were still some triggers that would send him over the edge -- hay and horses were bad and at 26 he is still sensitive to both of those and almonds, but not peanuts.

Hope you get some answers very soon. I know how frustrating this is for you and Mr. FG.

I echo the question on ashthma, Flashy...might have your Ped check for that, too. Also, check out Celiac disease...or other severe gastrointestinal disorders/diseases...I had that and we didn't know and I was a mess as a toddler/little girl.

And, of course, it could be allergy...to bedding? pets? pollen? dust? household chemicals you might use to clean? shampoo? soaps? It's a big thing, but just keep at this and you will figure out what's triggering it.

Just stay on those dern doctors...they sometimes blow stuff off...'it's just a kid' attitude. Be fierce!!! :pissed: :pissed: :innocent:

WOW guys that is super interesting about the asthma. I have asthma that developed as a teenager, but Mr. FG had asthma as a child as well as a host of random allergies, and then outgrew them. We've tried pressing his mom for more info about his allergy issues but she just shrugs us off, or else, doesn't really remember what specifically he had going on.

It seems to make sense that this is all somehow related to an allergy of some sort. I was reading today that sometimes they can have several sensitivities going on and then just hit a point where their system gets overloaded, such as on Wednesday. We had originally wondered if it was the pollen in the air that triggered it all, or the sunscreen I had slathered on him, or something he ate that morning... maybe a combo of all.

LD I just started keeping a journal this morning. I was thinking about animals I'd had in the past and various health issues I'd encountered and I remembered how I used to keep a log for my epileptic dog. If nothing else it may help us get a clearer picture of what is triggering him.

The good news is he's certainly a very robust, happy kid when he's awake so he is certainly thriving despite whatever is going on.

It is so hard not to worry though. I like solutions, resolutions and FIXING THINGS so being in limbo never works well for me. I feel so helpless.

Geesh, kids, no one tells you about this part of parenting!!!

wow , just saw this (I pretty much only check on the weekends). Hope things are looking up. Have you taken a hard look at your diet? Sorry, I don't have any info and am not in a typing mood, but, I think a lot of problems with kids these days is the processed food we eat. I know you are a very caring mother and are doing all the things the doctors tell you, but the thing is, lots of times doctors are out of the loop on things like this.

Can you find a good holistic doctor? And that's probably like finding a needle in a haystack (how do you know when you've got a good one?) Don't know if the magazine vegetarian times is still around, but you might want to check into that.

I know when I was first born (in 1955) the doctors told my mother I would have asthsma. She mega-dosed me with vitamin A and while now I don't have the best lung power, I don't have asthama (I'm sure you've noticed I don't know how to spell asthma). I know you can't just 'do things', my aunt was a nurse and my mother was into all that kind of stuff, so...

I hope things start looking up for you.

Flashy, sorry to hear that Colton is still NQR! You said this started about 6 months ago - can you think of anything that changed then? (When did you move into your new house - could it be a mold issue? Or asbestos insulation?) Did he get any vaccinations or did you go on any trips (I remember you said that Kena was sick and your father was sick, too, at one point, after they had both been in the same place . . . or am I remembering incorrectly?)? Change your detergent? New type of baby food?

Gosh, this must be so frustrating!!!

Start now listing every product you use, every person he comes in contact with, and every event just as Little Diva suggests and there might be an answer there, and at least you'll get a little control back. It could be something as simple as the free cookie at the grocery store with ingredients he can't handle, or gluten overload, or even some fabric softener or air freshener. I've known several people and animals that were very allergic to air fresheners, especially the automatic spray or plug in ones. The auto or plug ins cause constant exposure. And do you use any bedding or pillows with natural filling like feathers or wools? And I would also use the vinyl mattress covers to limit exposure to dust mites. If you have any window coverings in his room or anything but wood floors I would consider them as dust and allergen sources. And as you've said yourself it could be multiple sources combining and triggering things. Maybe an elimination diet for allergies or gluten exposure would work by starting with only a few foods, and adding gradually to see if there are substances triggering this such as wheat or dairy or gluten. And celiac is one to check on as others have said. Apparently these days we all have to be our own physicians, and that really irritates me.

A friend's daughter had night terrors as you describe and I believe they were at least intermittent until she started school, but her little girl could never remember anything about them. So that can keep happening. And the asthma does sound possible considering the hereditary tendency, when they do the allergy testing they should definitely test for anything any relative is allergic to, and all animal danders. In one side of my family there is a hereditary asthma that is triggered by animal dander, and many doctors have misdiagnosed this over the years (fortunately it skips generations and I don't have it).

Don't take this as a condemnation or a reflection on your housekeeping, because it isn't connected to that at all. But do you have any bug or animal infestations? Such as roaches or any other pest? There are people that are allergic to the leavings of roaches, and the pest control measures can often trigger allergies too. And mouse or other rodent leavings can spread all over a house, and cause problems too. Have you had the heater/AC serviced and the duct work cleaned since you moved in? It can be pricey, but it might be a source of dust and particulate materials also.

Flashy-don't forget things like the air freshener or other scents they spray in cars after detailing, or just to make it smell nicer. A friend I van pooled with had to drive her own car for at least a week after they would detail the van we rode in for work since the heavily scented air freshener triggered her asthma. And don't forget exposure to other pets like hamsters and such that some kids will bring with them to visit.
