So maybe Black Tack posted a similar topic at some point in the not so distant past, but "search" functions are so much less fun than starting a new thread! I am thinking about getting Mr. RR a fancy schmancy coffee maker for Father's Day (<--note actual foresight since Father's Day is a month away.) First area of inquiry: why would I do this? I have a drip coffeemaker and if I could find some decent freaking coffee (Vienna here I come! ) around here, wouldn't my drip coffee maker actually make a nice cup of coffee? Second area of inquiry: what is the difference between a cup o' joe and an espresso or a cappuccino? My impression is that espresso is a really strong short cup of coffee and cappuccino is an espresso with a large shot of steamed milk. Cafe latte is a shot of espresso and a shot of hot milk. Can y'all explain how very wrong I must be on all of this? Because when I googled coffee makers I found espresso makers and cappuccino makers ... how can this be??? Third area of inquiry: Hey, that foamy milk stuff is kind of nice! What's up with it and can a fancy schmancy coffeemaker actually fluff up the stuff for you?? Many thanks for your patience, Edited by Reynard Ridge, May 11 2011, 09:11 AM.

http://www.diffen.com/difference/Cappuccino_vs_Latte A latte is coffee and more milk. An espresso maker will only make espresso. A cappuccino maker will make espresso and have a steamer to steam the milk. |

Espresso machines are not really coffee makers. Do you guys drink Esprresso drinks? If not don't bother. Labor intensive way to drink coffee. |

My parents have these and they are awesome! (Their style is a little bigger but I think the single one would be fine) I like to go to their house to drink coffee just because it is so fun to watch it being made. The coffee always has excellent crema, and it can do regular coffee or espresso drinks. http://www.us.jura.com/home_us_x/products_home_use/ena_line/ena9.htm |

From when I worked at an Italian restaurant as a Barista, this is how I learned: Latte - you put your strong 'shot' of coffee. You heat up the milk till it is creamy and frothy. You hold back the froth pouring the creamy milk into the coffee glass. Then when it is almost full add a bit of froth but make sure its creamy froth (as opposed to foamy) Cappucinno (sp?) - This is done in a cup, It has a shot of coffee. Then you fill with foamy frothy milk to the top. It is much airey-er than the latte. You top with chocolate powder. Short Black - aka espresso....1 shot of coffee in a small glass. (a mini version of the latte glass) Long Black - can be in a the latte cup or a cup and is just a long version of the expresso. Generally you still use the same amount of coffee through the fancy machine and just more water. Some people ask you do one expresso shot, and then re-do the coffee to re-pour a fresh shot of coffee and continue with the water through the coffee to the top (if that makes sense...depends on the strength people prefer their coffee) Machiato - This is can be done in a short or long form. It is just either an expresso or long black to start, then you add a dollop of creamy milky foam and just a splash of milk. The splash of milk should make the coffee just a dark dark caramel colour - ie: not too light. It is served in a latte glass. Hope that helps

How about a nice french press? Makes the best coffee by far. And no electric! If you buy a machine over there, won't you need a converter if you (ever) live in the US? |

I think for a French press to work you need to have good coffee to start with. And it turns out, finding good coffee is phase 1 of this research project. After some discussion with friends locally, I have bailed on the crappy coffee I have been buying in Tesco and bought some (relatively) expensive 100% arabica bean coffee from our big box store. I am drinking the first cup right now and while I have the proportions of coffee and water off a tetch, the coffee is a huge leap forward from what we have been drinking. So at the moment I have paused in my quest. I think we'll drink this nice new coffee for a bit and then I can check out frothers. I think Mr. RR would appreciate having some frothy milk in his cup of joe on a cold morning, but maybe we don't need to go all the way to "fancy schmancy" to achieve that particular goal. More research is necessary. Perhaps it's time for another cup.

I used to make frothy milk with a metal bowl on top of a tea kettle! Then used a hand mixer to Froth. Cheap mans hot milk! |

This is why we have things like "Father's Day," and "Mother's Day" and "birthday." We get to spend money on frivolous things that we normally would eschew.
