Come to Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario where we live In The Gate Lots of A barns, an hour's trailer ride to the main National show centre and also an hour to where indoors are held. Less than an hour from Toronto with all of it's bells and whistles. We do Liberal well and have a very high tech and progressive community with 3 large Universities and a huge College within 15 minutes.Major Vet school 20 minutes away. Ok, so that brings us to the weather.... REALLY nice summers and gorgeous falls, maybe I will leave it at that

I am in Austin so I may be biased but I love it here. My company, although small, seems like it's hiring a new person every few months. We haven't experienced much of a downturn here that I have noticed (knock on wood). It's def the most liberal place I have personally lived, although I haven't lived anywhere but the south. You see lots of interesting things in the downtown area, but the suburbs and richer areas of town are much more mainstream. It snows here maybe once a year, amounts somewhere between just flurries and an inch or so. No one leaves their house that day. Does get hot in the summer - I don't mind that very much but some people do.There is not a HUGE A show population here like there is in the DFW area but there are enough good barns to choose from. Cost of living and cost of board/training seems reasonable in comparison to most places. |

I favor somewhere like Austin, for the reason that the economic picture there is stable and growing. My thinking is that with economic problems, housing crash, rise in unemployment equals less spending on animals and other extras. There should be some stories out there about this. I can see someone in a financial crunch not opting for expensive treatment for animals, where normally they would pay more, and a vet bill being the one that goes unpaid. So I think you need a place with a good economic base, growing in population (the sunbelt still is), and not an economically depressed area. Start networking like crazy, and see if the vet school you went to maintains listings of job openings. You could take just a job in the right area as an employee instead of as a partner, look around when you get there and then change jobs in a year or so if you want to. |

Round Rock is really nice....it's North of Austin...but the way both cities are growing they are almost the same...Georgetown is nice too... You are getting closer and closer to Waco which I would suggest you DON'T MOVE....then an hour up the street is Fort Worth HH

I actually live in Round Rock. Have lived in North Austin, Georgetown, Taylor, Hutto and Pflugerville as well. You might say I'm well versed in the north side suburbs. ![]() I'm more of a country kind of girl myself so I have never been to SXSW, but my trainer loves it. We have lots of music and fun things to do, no matter what your "flavor" is. Fair warning - it was 93 degrees yesterday. We're having a WARM April! |

Have to say Austin is my favorite city in Texas. Lots of things to do and see and the college does make it feel more liberal than the rest of Texas...but not by much (IMHO). The areas lhunterl and HH and JanM mentioned are all very nice. I like Georgetown bunches. If it weren't for the heat, it would have been my first choice to move to even over Colorado. We still have lots of family there (Lake View and west Austin as well as a cousin or two near downtown) and a family farm not too far away near La Grange in the Hill Country. It has a great "feel" to it. Texas A&M is close by so lots of vet stuff going on too as well as UT in Austin proper. The music scene is pretty awesome there too. As a "move" location, it gets a good vote from me.

You might see if the Vets Association has an online job listing service where you can advertise for position wanted in the area you are interested in. And you might see if A&M has any teaching positions (temp probably) for someone who is on sabatical or supervising labs or something (you can tell I know zero about vet schools and how they operate). They might want someone for a temp position who won't be trying to stay on or go for tenure for a limited time. Maybe someone to sub for a teacher who retired early or just quit-it wouldn't be forever, and it would give you a chance to look for more permanent jobs or decide exactly what town you want to live in. Maybe the small animal emergency rooms would have openings? Especially for the not so fun shifts, or a practice that has a temporary opening due to a partner retiring or leaving and they need someone until a new partner can be found would be a good temp position too. I know I seem to be pushing Austin and the Temple area, but I think it's a good economic area, and if you get a temp position and rent a place you could try and see if the area is a good fit for you professionally and personally. And if you don't like the area then you will have a better idea of where you want to relocate too, and won't have any permanent obligations to limit your relocation. Well, life has a way of taking the most unexpected turns. A few weeks ago, an Oncology specific internship was opened at Animal Medical Center in NYC. I missed the chance to apply for many of those earlier in the year, so I jumped on this one. I had my interview today and was the last candidate they interviewed - and they offered me the job on the spot after the interview. SO, as soon as I finish at my internship in Sacramento, CA I'll be moving to NYC! It's an incredible opportunity at one of the most prestigious private hospitals in the country. The bad news is I just can't come up with any way to take my horse with me. So, he's likely going to stay in CA and I'm going to start looking for someone to lease him for the year. At least my kitty cat gets to come with me! If anyone has suggestions for how to ride (hunter/jumper) around the city I'd love to hear them. |

A friend (long retired) used to be the boss at that hospital! The first photos of me were taken with me in HIS arms (therefore my siblings are sure I was delivered by a veterinarian). You could live in Manhattan (East side), or commute (train!) from Westchester County (NY) or Fairfield County (CT). All will be pricey. Look at Sleepy Hollow County Club (Scarborough NY), Fairfield County Hunt Club (CT), and Ox Ridge Hunt Club (CT). Also look at the PHA site (Westchester Fairfield PHA). Good luck. I love NY. |

That's wonderful! And a year from now you'll be even more qualified, and probably have your pick of jobs. I'm sure many of the larger practices will need an oncology specialist. As I recall (and it's been a while since this was shown on tv) the Animal Vets at Alameda East in Denver had a lot of specialists in their clinic, and I'm sure many other big practices will also. I'm so happy for you. |
