I'm in the process of job hunting, and unfortunately there aren't many jobs anywhere in California right now. So, I'm going to have to look out of state for jobs. I'm currently completely unattached except for my horse, who will be coming with me. The hard part is I've never lived anywhere other than California so starting the hunt is a daunting task! I could use a hand picking some states and cities to look at so I don't feel like I'm just throwing darts at a map!

What I'm looking for...
I'm looking to live at the edge of or close to a major metropolitan area.
I'd prefer an area that has a fairly liberal population and a community of young professionals.
Somewhere not too cold - I can deal with snow but if it gets and stays well below freezing all winter it would be a huge adjustment.
Finally, somewhere with a strong hunter/jumper community near that urban area. I'm used to riding at "A" circuit show barns and would like to live somewhere where there's a nice selection of barns close by. I've been riding at 3' for years, and I'm currently trying to make the step up to 3'6 equitation but I just don't get to ride enough this year to make it happen.
Finally, the area needs to have a decent job market and not be crazy expensive... veterinarian's don't make that much money!

Any suggestions of where might fit the bill? I'm open to anywhere in the country but it's hard to tell on paper where to look!

I think you should have lots of options!

Seattle? Oregon? I like Idaho, but I admit to not having a clue about the horse scene.

So far I am loving Colorado. I think this has been a mild-ish winter but overall I wouldn't call it "cold", at leat not for long stretches. Ride'emco or french_toast could tell you more about the hunter scene. The board here is more expensive (from what some CA people have told me), but I think the housing costs wouold probably be the same or lower than CA.

Kentucky and Tennessee are beautiful and have a nice hunter scene. I have a good friend who lives in Franklin (BEAUTIFUL!) and she loves it there. Lots of grass and great barns too, and you'd be close(ish) to Kentucky Horse Park for some excellent showing opportunities.

It's very exciting really! Have fun with it and let us know what you decide. :)

Thinking about your age and who you are (since I have met you!) I would give some serious consideration to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. It's not quiet as liberal as I like, but with IBM there, as well as a lot of technical firms, there are a lot of people moving there from the NE and West (as well as Internationally). It is also home to MANY large and well respected colleges and Universities.

Horse wise, it encompasses Southern Pines, plenty of shows and horse activities. Big bonus is you are only a couple hours from the Coast, as well as within a days drive to the mountains.

Oh, I forgot to add you are also only about 4 hours or so from the VA Hunt Country too!

If I were young and single it's close to the top of my list.

Oh this is a good resource, Raleigh comes in at #5, but it's certainly the most liberal of the top 5 (Austin isn't bad either). It's also the closest in climate to what you are used to, think CA climate with humidity ;)

Austin is great, has a good housing market and is much cheaper than CA, and they didn't have the economic recession the way many places did. Plus no personal income tax in TX. And checkout the Belton (Beltan?)/Temple TX area also for great housing.

Southern Pines, NC was suggested and sounds great also. Aiken SC too. Don't know what the horsey scene is like there but Huntsville AL has good housing, has a winter (but except for this year) that's not too bad (but it was bad everywhere this year), good schools, and a lot of government agencies at Redstone Arsenal to give you a good potential client base.

You might look at www.usajobs.opm.gov for government jobs-USDA and other agencies hire a lot (except during furloughs), and you can click on job search, type 'veterinarian' in the search box, find the GS number (0701 is the number) and then set up a search for jobs. You then click on the 'jobs by email' that sends you jobs that meet your criteria to your email. You need to fill out a resume type form on there so you can self nominate. I don't know what states you're licensed in (or if vets get a national license) but if you work for the federal government you only have to have a current license in any U.S. state. The job announcement will tell you when the job closes, how to apply, if it's full or parttime, or temporary (don't do the temps), and the salary plus any other requirements, and you need to fill out the appropriate application, plus submit extra paperwork the announcement calls for, and submit by regular mail by the closing date.

Are you a small animal vet or equine vet? If equine, I'd guess that the best places would include KY and FL. If you end up seriously considering NC, I have a friend who's an equine vet near Raleigh-- she'd probably be a good resource. I know she stays very busy down there. If you want her contact info, PM me.

My vet moved to Mansfield Texas from Orange County CA....I asked her why she chose Texas...the main reason was LAND for cheaper prices than CA....She has MORE business then she can handle...she's a MOBILE one....but has a barn at her house if needed...

OUR VET prices are cheaper than yours right now....so you might want to look into that...She's doing an awesome job and has more patients than she can shake a stick at...WE NEED A REPRO VET...hint hint hint....

Thank you for all the suggestions - it helps to have a few directions to start looking. I'm a small animal vet; not equine so can't help too much with the repo. I did do equine work through school because I know I'll get asked questions the rest of my life and I'd love to get into it someday. For now, I decided to leave horses as my hobby as a break from work.

Southern Pines was my pick too, but alas definitely not a liberal stronghold
How can you practice in another state? Is it easy? Is there reciprocity?
How about Alameda? Too close? :teehee:

I'll throw out Portland, OR. It's about as Liberal as they come, very active H/J scene. Some big trainers in the area and some big shows over the summer.

I don't know if you have ever heard of Dr. Tim McCarthy, he's a small animal surgeon. He and his wife are good friends of mine, I would be happy to put you in touch with them.

Good luck!
