Is the meadow on fire?

My barn is doing Secret Santa, and I drew a lovely young man (age 11) who got a crossbow this year for his birthday and has started hunting. I will of course ask his parents and friends what he might like, but I'm guessing that a hunting gadget would be a great gift. The price limit is $15. I know pretty much nothing about hunting, especially not crossbow hunting. I know that Jack has a deer camera set up near the back of the farm and takes some deer bait back there several times a week on his ATV. That's all I know. Any ideas? |

Egads, 11 years old with a cross bow?? That's actually legal in your state?? NY doesn't allow cross bows at all...not even for adults.Having grown up in a hunting family and with a brother that's an exeptional bow hunter....I would suggest good gloves. Like all winter sports, if your hands are cold, you're done. So maybe a collection of warm things -- camo gloves, a couple of hand warmers, and a packet or two of hot cocoa. $15 may be low for good gloves but you never know. Then again for an 11 year old, he probably needs quantity, not quality, as kids at that age tend to lose things! |

Apparently crossbow hunting is really popular here in Ohio, and it's legal during all hunting seasons and for all game. I assume the 11-yo (and his 13-yo brother) hunt under youth permits, which allows people under 15 to hunt under the supervision of an adult who has a hunting permit. Congratulations, you've just exhausted my knowledge of crossbow hunting laws in Ohio. Gloves are a great suggestion!

DH is an avid hunter and for that price, you could do some scent-block spray-- bow hunters love that stuff, you spray yourself down with it and supposedly the deer can't smell you coming. Costs $8-10. Maybe get him one of those deer mineral lick things (like horse salt blocks) to put near his scouting camera? A nice baseball cap would be good too-- either blaze orange or camo (around here you have to wear blaze orange during shotgun season but bow season is earlier so many bow hunters wear the camo hats.) Go to Dick's if you have one near you, they have all that stuff... http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4326429 scent block spray I couldn't find the regular hats on there (just the ones with built in lights which are cool, but more expensive), but I got my nephew a cool camo one there last year for like $10. Look on Sierra Trading Post and Cabela's too, they carry a lot of hunting stuff. Can you bait deer during hunting season in OH? That's a big no-no here in VA... you can feed them in the off season but not within (I think) 30 days of hunting season. PM me if you have more ?'s or need more help, I'm pretty well versed in this stuff (though I don't really want to be... sorta like how DH doesn't wanna know about horses but does! )

It was a no-no in Michigan too (at least I think so...heard that on the radio last year maybe?), but as I am discovering, Ohio has a very different hunting culture. Deer baiting is legal on private land but not public land. The farm is private land, so there ya go. There's a Dick's Sporting Goods on the way to the barn! Hooray! One of the neat gadgets that DH loves is the clip on "headlights". They are 4 or 5 little lights attached to each other that clip/slip onto the brim of a ball cap. I think they are usually under $20. |

OK, that's it. I will NOT complain ever again about my husband's hunting habit. I can't believe y'all have deer urine in your fridges! Hubby is not allowed to gut deer near our house either, I get too grossed out. He goes to the back 40 and does it. I'll eat the meat but don't want to be involved in the "process" at all! j4j, just saw these on Cabela's while I was online Xmas shopping for hubby http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Camo-Outfitter-Classic-Caps/1092433.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DCAMO%2BHAT%26x%3D0%26y%3D0&Ntt=CAMO+HAT ($6 camo baseball caps) If you could find a free shipping code, that may be a winner. (I found free shipping but only on $100 orders.) However, I still think Dick's is your best bet-- go in the hunting section, get the scent block spray and browse around for something inexpensive to put with that and the hat light. Those lights are cool, hubby has one of the hats with the light built in and it's awesome. I kinda want one for the barn when I do night check! |

Yes, but they have ones in camo pattern. DH told me the other night that "most" of the ones aren't that great. I wasn't 100% listening (shh, don't tell him!). He's got one brand that lasts and lights up better than the others. I can ask him which one it is if you'd like. Another great item is the clothes wash that washes away the UV that most detergents contain. We had a really nice 13 pointer hung in DH garage over Thanksgiving weekend. DH NEVER mounts anything and this one went to the taxidermist quicker than I've seen one caped out. |
