Love the beautiful braids and the smile! So glad it went well! Good for you in managing her hair so well, my understanding is that good hair is really important in African American culture....so trans-racially adopted kids are sometimes at a disadvantage socially with their peers if their parents don't know how to care for it properly. It's probably quite a learning curve?

I also fall into the straight haired white chick category. Actually, a funny story - when I worked for the Job Corps program some of the kids would want to touch my hair because they really didn't know many white people (who might allow them to feel their hair!). They used to say my hair felt like feathers to them. :teehee:

And goodness....Baby C is not a little dude, is he?? So adorable!

What a great update!!!!!!!

Well isn't she little miss sassy pants!

Did you do those little hair buns yourself? I'm impressed with the geometry! And how do you do them?

Little Baby C - I can just hear his squeal of delight at something funny! :cheer:

Love to see your beautiful family. I do not know how you do it. I can hardly care of myself. Glad Kena is feeling better.

Spicy looks adorable!!! I can't even stand how cute she is. My girls won't let me do anything with their hair and I'm a hairdresser. I can do some very cool dos if they would let me. :sigh:

The little man is not so little anymore. Is he a redhead? Looks like it in the pic.

She looks great, FG! Way to go with the hair! Our agency holds bi-monthly "hair club" meetings for parents of Asian and African American kids- you'd never think that Asian hair has so many individual needs, too! The "hair club" has gotten really fun and interesting over the years, and I've actually picked up a few tricks on dealing with my own white people hair from some of the speakers we've invited over the years. Pink lotion might be the most incredible non-frizz product on the market...

I'm so glad she's feeling better. I will be thinking of you over the holidays, and hoping she continues down the road to complete recovery.

French Fry I am so jealous that your agency holds those classes!! Ours does one annually, but it is really basic and I'd love something more consistent. I have started taking her to a local AA salon and they've been helpful but it'd be cool to have a hair support group! And let me tell you I have boxes of hair products I've bought and tried and not been able to use for one reason or another... so much trial and error. Another adoptive mom and I were joking that the agency should hold a hair product swap, where we all bring the stuff we've bought and can't use and trade with one another.

Fishy I've gotten better with the geometric patterns. Mine are nothing compared to some I've seen on other AA kids. I use a rat tail comb that lets me separate the hair and I will admit I'm pretty anal about getting really sharp, straight lines. Guess that is the designer in me!

TBF you are correct the hair is a BIG thing and I work hard to keep up with it. It requires a serious commitment-- with her thickness and texture, I can't get away with letting it go for even a day. It needs constant combing, detangling, oiling, styling. Even in a style like this, with the little knots... some AA hair would stay put for a week or more but not hers. I might get a 2 days out of this style if I'm lucky!! Really amazing how different it is from my hair. And it is funny what kids will do to you.... I color my own hair now, and rarely get it cut, but I think nothing of dropping serious $$ at Sephora for Kena's hair products or taking her to the salon to get her hair flat ironed or styled!

Yep Baby C has the craziest hair color-- sometimes it looks silvery, sometimes blonde, sometimes a hint of red. When he was born it was a rich auburn color, so there's no telling how it is going to end up eventually. He is such a little lovebug, really the easiest baby MINUS the not sleeping through the night thing... lol!!
