This probably a long shot but we're just keeping it in the back of our heads.

Over Thanksgiving I found out I'm going to be an Auntie!

My brother and his wife currently live in Idaho but he really wants to live in Bend. Wife is amenable to a move, although I don't know when it would be with the baby coming and all. Mr. Fishy and I are fairly mobile, especially with him having his own company, as long as we can find horse property.

What is Bend like? What's the horse scene? Any eventing up there? I'm sure there are a million trails? Mr. Fishy likes to event, I love to trail ride.

What would we need to know about being up there?

Well, considering I live in Sisters and that is about 18 miles west of Bend you came to the right place to ask!

It's great living here! There is a very active eventing culture here. This gal lives just down the road from me, http://www.onealfarms.com/?m=2. It is a pretty horsey area.

Bend is nice. Small town with lots of amenities. Active arts community, lots of good restaurants. The town of Redmond is about 18 miles to the north of Bend. I think more affordable, but if you are coming from California it may not seem expensive to you.

There is tons of trail riding, fishing, skiing, water sports.

We don't have as severe winters as Lost Farmer's neck of the woods, he is in NE Idaho.

Hmmm...what else do you want to know? I will PM you my phone number, feel free to give me a call.

Sooooooooooo pretty!

At this point I might take cold and snow vs. cold and freezing rain and wind! I think we're in for a WET winter and the horses are already up their ankles in mud (when they're not in the barn). Blech!!! :soapbox: :brickwall:

CDE, what are good horsey towns around Bend that we should look into? We'd love at least 20 acres, and most ideally would be with trail access (surrounded by BLM, perhaps) and flat or flat-ish. Right now we live in a hilly area and all I want is some flat land!!!!

Do you clip and blanket your horses? Do you blanket unclipped horses? Where we are we don't clip (don't ride much during the winter) and so don't blanket. Coldest it gets is probably low 20s.

What is internet access like there? Since Mr. Fishy has his own company (and due to the nature of his business) he needs top speed and reliability in the internet department.

Any areas to stay away from for whatever reason?

We wish we were in a position to just make a move but it will be a while. We would have to sell our house first and obviously now is not the time to do so.

Okay, lets see here....

Mostly it's flat around here so that shouldn't be a problem. The Redmond area is nice. Highway 97 runs from WA to CA, right through Redmond to the north through Bend, about 18 miles in between. Pretty soon there will be noticeable boundary between the two. But any where in the Bend/Redmond/Sisters area. Prineville is to the east of Redmond and getting more developed as well.

Apollo is the only one that gets clipped (and that is just a trace clip) since he's the only one that really gets any kind of work during the winter. Most horses here really don't need to be blanketed if they have shelter of some kind. I blanket because I'm a softy, they would get along just fine without. We have very volcanic soil with good drainage so we have very little mud, mainly just around gates and so forth. Everyone here says it's "dry cold", not the damp kind that gets in your bones. I find that true, it's easy to dress for it and stay warm. We get a lot of sun in the winter too, yes it's 20°F but it's sunny!

Most places have high speed internet available. We, however do not since we live in the toolies! Qwest won't run an updated phone line out here since there are so few people on our road, I think you have to have so many per mile for them to do it. I have this, http://www.ykwc.com/ and it suits me just fine but I am not a connoisseur ;) There is Bend Cable and a Bend Broadband that are high speed I believe.

No place I can think of really. There really aren't any bad neighborhoods that I know of, especially if you are looking at acreage.

So there you have the .10 tour!

Ok, thanks! As long as I'm asking, do you know any realtors who specialize in horse property?

I love daydreaming about this stuff . . . might be good to get on a mailing list for the MLS, that way I can keep my eye out...
