My folks are in NC. In Raeford, near Fayetteville, Southern Pines, Pinehurst, etc. is The Haven.
My 2 dogs came from The Haven and they are the best dogs in the world
If I was home enough to make them cat proof, I would have a cat from The Haven too.
http://thehaven-friendsforlife.org/
The dog to the far left in the banner on the front page of their website is my "Mick." She is the coolest dog EVER
I went to The Haven to adopt one dog and came home with 2.
I wanted an older Golden Retriever. I came home with the far opposites on the canine spectrum, and could not be happier. Your list of requirements reminded me of my journey around the kennels. Out of 700 dogs, my two were the only non barkers. They were sitting side by side, and Mick was washing Ruby's face. Mick was feral, and Ruby (I discovered when I got home) had a biting issue. No matter, they are the best dogs in the world. It was a BIG change to not have perfect Golden manners, but I have no regrets. They are good girls, and learned to be social (well, Ruby did, Mick is still pretty wild).
I hope you soon find a cat for your folks. Maybe you'll take two home instead of one. I know now I could NEVER have left Ruby behind.

OLR - i don't think i'm that lucky. I have the minor annoyance symptoms of itchy eyes and excessive sneezing. But then after about 3-4+ days, I get breathing symptoms which get progressively worse the longer I stay 'living' around the cat. I don't think I could ever own one unfortunately (unless there was a miracle breed).
They are pretty. My aunt had 2 (now just 1) bengal cats. They are stunning to look at. Not all that friendly but.... Yeah Bengal's aren't known to be super friendly (especially with strangers), as they have held onto their "wild" characteristics. However, they are on my "breeds to own" list!

My father has a Bengal that is the friendliest thing on earth. He's really cool looking and has the longest legs. He drives you crazy talking and following you around trying to get you to sit down so he can get on your lap. He was a rescue that was turned in because he meowed all the time and the owners didn't like that. The people who had him paid a fortune for him, but my dad got him for $25.00, because that's what cats cost at the shelter.

My friend has one that is great with her but is very weird around strangers (although most cats are.. everyone calls my cats stuffed animals because they've never seen them move ). There was one that was retired from a breeder that I was planning on getting.. but he was adopted before I could go meet him. Hmpf.

It was like having a feral cat in the house. Totally unfriendly, peed everywhere and actually was trying to stalk/kill their tox fox terrier. Nasty. After that experience, I have no interest. Ocicats are just as beautiful and exotic looking and are 100% domestic.

He looks just like that and he certainly talks like a Siamese which they are bred from.
