One of the organizations I belong to has a new feature: Lifetime Membership for the price of 16 years of membership, paid at once, you are afforded membership in the group for your 'life'.

I'm 47. Plus 16 = 63. I should live that long so.....

But what about hubby?

55 + 16 = 71

OTOH these fees keep the orginization running. But what if its all life members at the end and no incomes??

What do you think?

I would put it more into the perspective of how long do you plan to participate in things that require this membership? Will you and hubby be doing whatever it is at 63 and 71?

:psycho: My parents are lifetime members of a "community club" at a local lake...owned by the town but has pavilions, swimming area, etc. It's been many years (20+) since we've used it as we have a camp of our own on the same lake, but my dad went back last summer to check it out for a group outing....no one even knew about the lifetime memberships, all the original "organizing" members have died or moved away and the current administration didn't know what to do about the lifetime members. :psycho: :brickwall:

So, I guess I'd sort of agree with OI; what is the benefit to you to be a lifetime member after 16 years and will they still be a functioning organization then?

When I bought Little Girl, I joined the Paint Horse Association...it was like 400.00 forever....I figure I MIGHT USE IT one or 2 times

Have YET to take advantage of it...BUT BY GOLLY I will ONE day...

I say YES....get it out of the way...and if/when you decide you don't want to "use" it anymore....enjoy the publications....

HH :)

One thing to factor in is that typically membership costs rise over time. So, you will pay 16 years today what it costs today. In another five years, membership will likely be higher. Likely you will wait less than 16 years to break even.

I think. :teehee:

Depending on the organization, you may get big benefits and discounts. A friend bought a now-USEF membership almost 30 years ago. She saved about $1500. on purchase of a piece of JD farm equipment with membership. Savings was way more than she paid for the Lifetime membership. Also gets car rental discounts when traveling and an ever increasing bunch of other benefits.

Some lifetime memberships in groups are well worth it, others like health-clubs are just taking your money. Club doesn't stay in business long enough to use up the cost or you get tired of going. I have seen the Clubs go out of business a bunch of times, leaving members hung out to dry on memberships.

As RR said, price of memberships never goes down!

Okay so, the organization is the Michigan Trail Riders Association.

And yes, I do worry about the group going poof! like that email. They have been around since 1963 but with NREPA and other environmental laws - and bozos riding up and down the river beds making arses of themselves in front of the DNRE - I can see the loss of the priviledge we have coming. :mallet:

So I dunno about that lifetime thing.

AM is out of town for a while. Like 2 weeks? Don't quote me on that but I recall it was quite a few days...
PMs might be a good idea, or a personal thread you (and others) will have to bump periodically.
I think she's moving from the southern to northern hemisphere right about now!
