Delia - can you talk to ma's PCP about the meds? Maybe a home health nurse can visit daily to do meds and keep an eye on mom's condition. Can't mom drink the Frappucinos? At least it's something! I tried "sneaking" Boost and Ensure into dad's daily malteds from Baskin & Robbins. He was very polite and drank them. One day though he said - "here you drink this" - and I could taste the difference. He had known the whole time. He asked me not to add stuff to his food. I never did again.
I've been thinking about the home health nurse option, but she has major issues with paranoia/anxiety as well, so it would be a very, very big step to have someone come into her apartment to check on her. We had a very bad experience with home health care nursing about 30 years ago, when my grandmother (her mother) was dying of congestive heart failure (not showing up, stealing stuff, rough treatment, etc.), so it would be pretty tough to get her to agree to it.

Yes, she definitely can drink Frappucinos. They're slightly better than the ginger ale she subsists on. But I was thinking that something like Ensure or Boost would be a more nutritious option if they don't taste gross. That being said, for breakfast today she ate a banana, two small cinnamon buns and a small cup of homemade (by me) chicken noodle soup, so that's really good for her! :cheer:

:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: Cheers for the good breakfast!!
What about half Ensure and half frapaccino? At least it would mask any nasty aftertaste that the Ensure might have... :spew:

And again, I get how hard it is to take care of an aging parent.

BH1, BH2 and Delia -- you guys are doing the hardest job ever...

Just an FYI, but the Carnation Essentials drink in chocolate tastes good! Last night I did a taste test before giving it to my mom, and I liked it. Pretty much tastes like thick chocolate milk. More importantly, she liked it too, and actually asked for it at breakfast this a.m.  At Whole Foods I also found coconut milk "yogurt" in chocolate flavor. It looks and tastes like pudding, with just a little tang to it, and is good nutritionally. That was a hit with Mom as well, so I'm on a roll.

Good news D!!!

I'm sure it is hard. We are going through the same with my G-ma. I take dinner over to her once a week, we all do one night. I'm never sure if she actually eats it though!! It's like a never-ending battle.

So glad you found something that Mama D likes!

Oh GOOD!!! Someone else feels this way too!! :innocent: I thought it was just me being a horrible selfish daughter.

I frequently feel this way and my mom hasn't even moved in yet. As soon as the hospital will let her go, we're thinking today or tomorrow.

I don't have kids so I'm really not use to all the icky human type germs and tasks that make me want to hurl. I am so easily grossed out by people germs. Mom asked me about a pedicure this morning......... I said, sure I'll drive you..... not what she meant :spew: I said mom, I won't even touch my husbands feet without socks on, seriously!!

Oh, and sheath cleaning and horse snot doesn't bother me at all, go figure :teehee:

You guys are all doing amazingly well, I know how hard it can be. Particularly with the nutruition all of a sudden you are doing the reverse of the norm and trying to figure out foods that are nutruitious but higher in fat.

Sounds like it's working for you Delia!!

Sparky, often there are people who will come to the house and do a pedicure. It's a real necessity I think because as you age the nails get so thick and brittle and really need to be soaked properly before they can be cut. See if you can find someone in your neighbourhood.

BH2, Good Luck with your pops. That must be so hard when he's drinking and smoking and you wondering if he's going to be asked to leave. Although now I get why both of our Dads are drinking. They aren't happy with their lives and so frustrated by what they CAN'T do any longer. This aging thing doesn't look like much fun :(

Boy, ain't that the truth. I had to take the pain meds away from my mom's apartment today b/c she had gotten to taking them to just knock herself out. She said she just wants to sleep because she can't do anything else. Of course, if she would agree to cataract surgery, a hearing aid and a walker things could be different for her, but . . . .

That is exactly what has happened. My Dad was suddenly stripped of everything that made his life worth living. His home, and the taking care of it, wiith all the gardening that he loved, his ability to drive and the independence that comes with that. He is definitely depressed, and the days are very long I'm sure. Take a life time of drinking, add those conditions, the inability of his body to metabolize alcohol like it used to, and you have, disaster.
It's funny how some people have the ability to adapt though, and some people do not. My stepmother has been through the same thing, actually worse. She has had two falls, one resulted in a fractured hip, and most recently, a fractured pelvis. She has spent a great deal of the last year in either the hospital or a nursing home. Yet, she retains some of her spirit, her sense of humor, and her ability to keep her chin up and keep fighting. My Dad has done the COMPLETE opposite.
Ultimately, some people are survivors under lifes most difficult challenges, at any age. Some people are not. There really is not much in between. My stepmother has proven herself to be a survivor. My Dad has not...

BH2 you know if I was nearby I would    you, but I just have to send you them virtually

I keep saying it, but it is SO difficult to deal with aging parents. I watched my Mom deal with my grandmother when she had Alzheimer's and her frustration and sadness only to have to go thru the same thing with her when she developed it too.

It was so hard to have my rock, my true North, my wonderful independent mom, become so dependent and mentally incapacitated. :,(

Well, I think my mum finally is starting to feel a bit better and come out of the fog. This a.m. she ate a big breakfast, even by normal standards, and when I reminded her to brush her teeth she gave me an eye roll and said, "Isn't it time you left for work?" Then she climbed out of bed, walked to the bathroom under her own steam, shut the door on me and yelled, "Bye!" :teehee: :teehee:

I'll take cranky/fiesty Mom over doped up/listless Mom any day. :cheer: :cheer:

Yay, D!

It's like when a pet is feeling better and gets back to their naughty selves! I think it's a great sign..
