OMG I cannot imagine! That is horrid. Bad enough having strange people gawking at you but to have to go through those kinds of invasions that many times is Not. Cool. I think sometimes the med students get so excited they forget these are real people! I felt like we were on an episode of Grey's Anatomy the first night we were here. Anyway thanks all for the continued jingles and prayers. I think they are doing the trick! She had a very rough night, but things seemed to even out a bit this morning and she got a little rest. When she woke up I was able to give her a little sponge bath and fix her hair a bit which I think helped her perk up. She started talking a little, we played for awhile and watched some cartoons. She has been a little crabby which I am VERY HAPPY about! She is a fiesty little girl... we call her "spicy"... lol. So I was kind of happy to see some of her porkiness coming out. Means she must be feeling a little better. Her face has been swollen along with her hands and legs, but that seems to be coming down. Her lips and mouth are just one big, open blister and that has been tough-- because she's on so many blood thinners the sores won't heal so they are just bleeding and crusting non-stop. Part of her silence I'm sure ahs been the fact that her mouth, tongue and lips are so sore. I was starting to get frustrated with the whole process and the craziness, so we brought in the big guns-- my bossy mom! She was an ICU nurse in this hospital for 20 years so she knows the ins and outs and was able to kind of take charge. She knows what questions to ask and she still knows a lot of the nurses and the cardiology team so that has really helped us to get a handle on everything. She had been staying with Colton the last 3-4 days as he knows her best, so we felt she was better off there, but I was relieved to have her come to the hospital and shake things up a bit. We are crossing our fingers that the second round of IV Ig has done the trick. The docs only seem to be keeping us informed in terms of a few hours at a time... so right now we are just waiting to see how she is responding over the next 8-10 hours. Once her temp is normal for a 24 hour period, and she's eating and drinking she can go home... hopefully in the next few days maybe?? Such a weird thing this all has been-- no one knows why or how it happens, just a weird malfunction of the immune system. Hubby and I are both taking a deep breath now.... ran out and grabbed a big lunch, took showers, adn are not trying to "relax" a little if that is even possible! We both kind of crashed with relief once we saw her start to perk up today, and now I think we are feeling a little cheery that the end is in sight! Anyway thanks again everyone for the continued jingles, prayers and good vibes. Y'all are good peeps!!!!!!!!! |

Flashy -- So glad to hear the positive report! And I just realized that in my post from this morning, I accidentally hit the LOL smiley instead of the jingley one. So here are some more jingles that Kena has a restful night (actually, all of you) and gets to go home soon!

Amen. I have an adult patient (a chemo cruiser) who comes in maybe twice a year. He has a rare - well I won't tell you because you will all gag... He has to roll on his stomach for you to see it, ok? He gave the hospital an OK to photograph this rarity for medical publications. THEN the trail of future, present and past MDs, DOs, NPs, RNs, and just about the whole alphabet came knocking. Being that I am his buddy he confided he was sick of pulling down his pants. And he asked "when will it stop?" So I chimed right in "Well, Jerry, it'll stop when YOU tell them they can't be gawking at your fine butt. At least not for free" And he laughed. From then on he would tell them "She's my agent (pointing at me if I were around), she gets 10 percent." It's been two years now and only a handful have asked. It really is a "never will see again" opportunity. I have another patient with Itchyosis. Same deal. Most charming woman I have ever met, in a body as hard as a shell. Her southern sweet drawl gets awfully sticky-sweet when she tosses out the tourists. She cruises between the burn unit and us, covered like a mummy. She's had 60+ years of stares! And lastly, one of our pt's had the similar Stevens Johnson syndrome. The alphabet gawkers came out in droves! Her mom wouldn't let them get past the first knock. She did let them do one video, and a few pictures. After that nobody but staff assigned to that pt got in. FG, I am glad your ma is around to help keep the health care team in line! |

Awwww poor poor baby, Flashy!! You guys must be just exhausted. I'm glad that your Mom was able to come in and shake things up a bit and that you've learned to say "NO!!". I had the same problem with all my nasty blisters. Every doc/nurse in the place wanted to see because it was such an unusual reaction. Thankfully for me, it was on my arms and legs, so it didn't bother me much to show it, but YIKES. Some of the stories here! I think some people don't realize that you CAN say no in the hospital. I know it took us awhile to realize that WE had the power. Kena is so lucky to have such great parents and such a great support system looking out for her. Tell "Spicey" to keep on getting better!!! |

Ok, I just blew my stack. First I had a med student in the hallway reviewing her chard and I heard her make a comment about one of her lab reports that "if she were an adult she'd have had a massive heart attack" Now granted I don't know the context but something like that makes a mama worry. I let it slide. Then tonight they sent in a student nurse and a professor to deliver her evening dose of aspirin. She has to take a sh!tload of chewable pills, yeah not so easy for a kid whose mouth, throat, tongue and cheeks are full of sores, swollen and bleeding. It has gotten to the point where Kena pukes the minute she sees the aspirin coming. I don't know why they can't get her a liquid form, they keep telling me it is only chewables or suppositories. We've been crushing the aspirins and putting them in applesauce or juice but it is really gritty and must taste horrible. Usually the nurse comes in with a helper, they hold her down, dump it in fast and everything is fine. Kind of like worming a horse. Don't mess around jsut do it quick! The professor seemed to have no idea what to do, so she farted around for 20 minutes... the poor kid screamed, threw up three times, cried, freaked out, you name it. The student looked like a deer in headlights. Finally the lady handed me the meds and walked out. I was like um.... aren't you guys the experts? Marc and I tried for another 20 minutes but no go. I finally paged the nurse on shift and she came down and was able to dump it in her mouth fast, and then she talked me down. I KNOW students need to learn and I totally get that! But if you are going to send them in with a professor MAKE SURE THE PROFESSOR CAN ACTUALLY PERFORM THE TASK! I'm also a little tweaked because for the last several hours she's been telling me she feels like she is choking. I've told a resident, and three nurses, but everyone keeps going "well maybe her throats just sore." I'm sure it is, but it is a weird complaint, and this kid is usually spot on at articulating how she is feeling. I think I may call our Ped practice and talk to the doc on call to see if they can ask the resident to at least evaluate her or something. She's settled quietly in bed right now... If I was a smoker I'd be going through a pack right now, instead I'm online getting a quick internet "hit" Must run now, thanks for letting me vent... Edited by FlashGordon, Nov 3 2010, 05:11 PM.

Jingle Jingle! Poor SpiceyGordon! When I was a kid I had a verrrrry bad break to my leg which had me on the maximum dose of children's chewable tylenol for about 6 months. I hated the taste/flavour texture. It made me sick to have to take it (I was 6...). To this day, I love grape, but if its the grape those tylenol were like, I can still feel the gag reflex coming on! yucki yucki! Poor kenna! All my jingles for her

I would ask to speak to the nursing supervisor. She/he probably has most if not all of the hospital to deal with tonight, but no matter she/he is there. Tell her/him you are concerned about the "choking" complaint and feel it is being ignored. Please ask your current nurse to check with the doctor on call (again) to see how they plan to address this new issue. As for oral meds - I'd request the suppository next time. Tell your nurse to pass on to day shift - NO student nurses. period. And when daylight rolls around, ask to speak to the unit manager. He/she can be a very good partner. Keep notes - who, when, what... You are a wonderful advocate!! |
