thanks all! The good news for me is that I *think* mother in law is coming, which means help in the kitchen and help with kids and being able to show her around the area so maybe she'll move here (yes I like my mother in law - 99% of the time at least :teehee: ). The bad news about her coming means she will come with her own ideas of what she wants to make and her own recipes...but because all of you have shared so generously, I am absolutely making 1-2 of things you all recommend here, and she will just have to deal with it!

Quick question on the squash soup...what the heck is a "yellow crookneck squash"? :pwtf:

I guess. Just like the kind I was growing this summer and that you got in your boxes. http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=yellow+crookneck+squash&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=WyG_TOCSF8L38AbnzuW6Bg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CC4QsAQwAg&safe=active

Wife just informed me that I get to cook thanksgiving for 25 and I don't have an oven or stove top. We will be at her dad's house remodeling the kitchen over the holiday. Her sisters and some of the family will be there. Now how am I supposed to pull this off without a kitchen?

Turkey breast
stuffing
mashed potatoes
gravy
cornbread
veggies
Fruit Cobbler

I think it is doable but I am going to need a ton of wood to keep my fire going. Hope this works out. LF

LF-You can get deep fried or roasted turkey breast, or cook it elsewhere at some friend's house the day before. And you don't need a kitchen for an electric stove and can put one anywhere there is a suitable 220 line (garage or workshop?). And you can pre-cook the potatoes, just mash after reheating in a microwave, fruit cobbler is a day before thing too, cornbread is better the second day also. If you plan it right and have a couple of microwaves for reheating you can just have to do the gravy, veggies, and breads on the day itself.

DO NOT HAVE CRANBERRIES FROM A CAN!!!! :spew: I can think of almost nothing grosser - it is so simple and easy to make real cranberry sauce - plus you can do it the night before to cut down on T-day cooking.

But Fishy, Mr. Delia LIKES it out of the can! (True confession -- I like it too.) I guess it's something about the metallic taste and the way the cranberry sauce retains the shape of the can that makes us nostalgic! To each his own . . .

You're not alone...I like the cranberries from a can too. There's something highly satisfying about watching it plop out of the can in one big can-shaped blob and then slicing it into pretty, smooth slices. I've actually never tried real cranberry sauce so I'm not sure if I prefer the canned stuff to fresh, I just know I love the canned. Maybe I should one of these days.

I intend to make your yummy sweet potato dish in a few weeks while Mr. Indy is out of town. For dinner. And possibly breakfast the next day. I am not ashamed about this plan at all. I'm looking forward to it. :teehee:

You guys may be my saviors as well. Dad invited his entire family for Thanksgiving, which adds 10 more people and 2 babies to what is generally a low-key, 5 person affair. My mother is freaking out already, and in a fit of insanity I offered to help cook. I'm saving all these suggestions as we speak!

The plan is to cook the entire meal over a fire and keep it as traditional as possible. I think we have it figured. With the heavy dutchoven it will work. I don't have an oven big enough to do and entire turkey so breasts will have to do. The cornbread was suggested by my son. Cobbler in an oven is an easy thing. I do think now we are ditching the mashed potatoes and going with a veggie mix of baby carrots and little potatoes cooked in a dutchoven. The wood part to keep my fire may be a bit of an issue. I will report after the event. LF

you all are cracking me up with the true confessions about cranberry sauce...I confess too! I love it from the can - as does my entire family, both sides! Even my sister in law who is as fancy as fancy gets, uses the canned cranberry sauce. I personally love the rippled edges from the can :)

LF -- For the veggies you can just seal them up in foil with herbs and a few pats of butter, and then throw the foil packet on the fire. Works really well!
