Mr. I and I are closing on a house at the end of October (squeeee!!!!!) and said house needs a new stove. It currently has an in-counter electric range circa 1964 and a separate oven that is newer but incredibly tiny (I'm not sure my beloved dutch oven will fit in it). Because neither of us are keen about the electric range nonsense and since the house has gas heat, we're having a contractor run a gas line into the kitchen so we can get a gas stove. So.....we need a gas stove. Mr. I wants a nice stove and I'm not going to disagree with him on this one. Do any of you have gas stoves you like and would recommend? Or hate and would not recommend for that matter! Anything we should keep in mind while searching for one? Features you love, features you hate, etc? And what's the deal with convection ovens? Do I need one? Will my life be totally changed forever if I have one? and fair warning....this will probably be the first in a series of "OMG we own a house now what the hell do we do" posts |

How exciting! When we remodeled our kitchen, I really wanted a 5 burner gas stovetop, but it's hard to find that in a range except for the massive, expensive professional ranges. I also prefer electric for the oven and dual fuel ranges are $$$. So rather than getting a range, we got a gas stovetop with a separate electric convection wall oven under it. I couldn't be happier with either. The stovetop is Dacor and the oven is GE. Features I really like are: (1) sealed burners, so that when stuff inevitably drips or bubbles over, you don't have to take the burners apart to clean; (2) having one or two burners that are "high power" so they can boil a pot of water quickly; (3) several burners with a simmer level; and (4) continuous grates, so you can put a long griddle pan across two burners and get uniform heat. That way everyone can eat their pancakes/french toast together rather than in batches. I never had a convection oven before and I do like it a lot, but it's not a must have. It cooks more quickly than conventional, which is nice. For things like roasts it's important that you keep the meat on a rack rather than flat in the roasting pan so that air can circulate underneath it. I think bakers are the ones who really go gaga over convection -- particularly bread people -- but I hardly ever bake so it doesn't make much of a difference to me. I think virtually all ovens have a self-clean feature these days, but if not, make sure you get one that has it. |

My previous Jennair had convection. I loved it! Definitely buy a copy of Consumer Reports. Reading their opinions of appliances has helped me many times. I purchased every model they recommended, and have been very happy. I also went to the Lowes and Home Depot sites and read buyer reviews of appliances. That helped me too. As Delia said, the options are very useful. I had a griddle, grilling racks, and all sorts of extras. Loved them! A bitch to clean, but still loved them!! |

Congrats! We have an electric stove but we do have the convection oven and in four years I have NEVER used the convection feature. Like, seriously... never. I have no idea how to alter baking times/temps for it and could not understand the manual so I just don't use it. Of course, about the only thing I really bake is blackberry cobbler so it doesn't really matter. If I was into baking cookies, cakes, etc., I guess I'd manage to figure out how to use the damn thing!

I have the opposite of what you are asking.....BUT I would like to add my 2 cents.... I have a small gas drop in range top and an electric double oven....I LOVE My ovens...I went to the store and opened everyone to get the BIGGEST ONES available at that time... BEFORE you buy anything....MEASURE....IF YOU WANT a huge oven...there might not be space for it...The counter top can be made bigger to drop a range top in...but Might look out of place by the cabinets and drawers that are under it... My stove top is too small for me, I got the smallest one...that will be the first thing to go whenever we remodel....I'd go 5 burners...or at least a 36" spread on the 4 burner... LIKES on my ovens....other than they are SUPER HUGE....I love the auto set buttons...you can leave a cold covered dish or pot in there and set the timer to go on let's say in an hour and turn off in 2??? or whenever you wish... You can also set the temp and the time and it goes off..I LOVE this feature...I come in from work...get dinner into the oven set it and "FORGET IT".....get the puppy dogs and head to the barn...when I come back....I have my hot meal ready.... No convection....sorry.... Don't forget to Take Pics... HH

So in theory, I could get a fancy gas drop-in range and then an electric oven separate? 'Cause really I want gas for the range but if I could get an electric oven that would make me happy (I mean one that is bigger than the toaster-oven sized thing already in the house). I've had the worst luck ever with gas ovens - I've only had one that kept accurate temperature - but I always thought it was a pair thing, that you had to have a whole gas unit. Stove shopping has me excited. That and de-pinking the master bathroom (strangely, Mr. I is not as disturbed by the pinkness as I am). |

Instead of a drop in I would get a regular stove, and just cut the cabinet to fit. If you get wall ovens the electric ones standard, if you get a cooktop that is bigger than the current one you will have to get a bigger range hood I think. And if you get a bigger stove you will have to replace the cabinets on either side(or have them cut down in width), and you might as well get a regular free standing stove instead of a drop in. They do make electric oven/gas burner combos but they are very pricey. If you have room in the kitchen you could get double wall ovens (the wider ones are very useable) & I think the 30" are the biggest standard ones-but you need to put them in a separate cabinet, and they will be electric. You could also do a countertop gas stove, but that will involve replacing the stove cabinet and the countertop. I second the sealed gas burners-much easier to clean. And for prices you get the best prices on all of the appliances at the big, discount places-they have rotten sales help, and you probably transport stuff yourself but they are worth the effort. |

Yeppers! Not just theory -- my kitchen is living proof!! Your experience with a gas oven is exactly why I wanted electric -- innacurate temperature. But I really, really hate electric for the stovetop -- very difficult to manage the heat level. The reasons that I didn't just get a range are: (1) With the number of burners I wanted, I would have had to get a professional range, and the stovetop/oven combo was significantly less expensive -- like many, many hundreds of $$ less expensive; and (2) even if I compromised and got less burners, dual fuel ranges still were more expensive than a separate stovetop and wall oven. Edited to add that you have to be careful about the specs for the drop-in stovetop and oven below it in order to make sure there's enough clearance between the two. We originally had matching GE stovetop and oven, but oddly enough, they didn't fit with each other. So we ended up with the Dacor stovetop, which I really like. Ours is gas on top but the oven is electric w/convection. It just cooks a little faster and supposedly more even. I would not recommend Viking. We've had many service calls.

We did this mess 2 years ago. Natural gas is not an option in this are as we are too remote. We could have gone propane but at 6000 + feet the air is less and the BTU's are not that good. We went with and electric range and it is okay I would have rather had a gas but as I explained is was not an option. I insisted that Mrs. Lost have a wall oven in addition to the stove/oven combination. We went with the GE ovens as they seemed to get the best reviews. The cook top is not exactly what we wanted but it is working pretty good. LF |

Also, off point but just FYI, since we didn't have room for a second oven AND a microwave, what we did was get a 27" (I think that's the size) GE Advantium oven, which is a convection oven, microwave and "Advantium Speedcook" oven (whatever that is!) all in one. I "think" it broils too. We pretty much just use it as a microwave, but I do use the oven functions when the main oven is full (usually holidays) and I need to make hors d'oevres or a side dish. I'm very glad we went that route, b/c really, it's only 2-3 times a year when we actually need a second oven. |
