My first horse trailer was a 2h BP, step-up, slant-load. Still have it but haven't used it since we got our 2h straight load Equispirt. When we had four horses we had it as an "in case of fire emergency" trailer so that we could get everyone out. It has been packed with our emergency stuff - food, clothes, food for the animals, etc. - for a while. I just took it in for a servicing and I'm now wondering if I should even keep it. Nothing is wrong with it, it has fairly low towing miles, is in good shape, etc. We just don't use it and to be honest I feel like we could use the money. OTOH, it does give me a feeling of safety to have an extra trailer in case of emergency ('cause we still have three horses) where we can keep everything packed up and ready to go if necessary. Any thoughts? |

Well as nobody has replied, Iwill give you my thoughts. I don't know where you live, but I would evaluate the odds of an emergency happening and how much value an additonal trailer gives you. If you live where wildfires are common or flooding is an issue, then an additonal trailer would be useful. Where I live, neither one of those would be an issue. Do you have any neighbors that you can coordinate emergency plans with? Perhaps a neighbor would have room on their trailer for one of your horses. What other emergency plans have you made? I have no experience in this kind of thing, but it seems like having a place set up to take your horses should an emergency arise would also need to be addressed. How far away that place is and how long it takes to get there would also be determining factors. For example, if you are worried about flooding, but have a safe place 20 minutes away then I would think you could reasonably make two trips. Are you planning on getting a fourth horse? Then you might want to keep it. How much is it worth and how much does it cost you to keep it up? No answers, but just some random thoughts. |

Do you have two tow vehicles? If you don't have two tow vehicles, then two trailers is a moot point. ETA: I have 8 horses and only a 3 horse trailer. There are 4 horse barns that may only have a 6 hors trailer--I don't think you need to have enough trailers to trailer every horse at once. Edited by RHowell, Sep 30 2010, 06:38 AM.

I'd say the first step is to put a price value on the trailer. In this recession, 2-horse bumper pull values are way down, especially nice ones from brands like Featherlite and Equispirit and 4-Star. If you're not going to get a price that you consider worthwhile, then the problem has solved itself. |

This. If you only have one two vehicle, having a second trailer is unnecessary. |

Too bad you live across the country. I'm looking for one right now and haven't found much in my area that I like.I agree about tow vehicles. As far as emergency plans, we really don't have evacuation issues around here....so it's hard for me to imagine a need for a second trailer that you don't use. So I guess I'd say list it for what you want for it, and if you don't get it then you don't have to feel too guilty about keeping it. |

If you're in an area that may need to do an emergency evacuation (I think you're in CA, so maybe fire issues?), and if you have two tow vehicles, I'd keep it. Especially if it's paid for. The peace of mind is invaluable. I live on the southeast coast in hurricane area, and finally broke down and sold my 2 horse BP for a 3 horse GN (4 in a pinch, if necessary). Knowing that I can get them all out together if needed has helped reduce the stress of hurricane season. |

I have 2 trailers for 2 horses and yes 2 trucks. One is a 2 horse bp, the other is the 36' long beast. Each used almost weekly. So if I did not use them they'd go - but I would want one so that I could evac if needed. |
