First thing i would do is speak to her parents and ask what they think would be appropriate and when. And if there is no answer because they too are grief stricken, perhaps a donation to either a shelter or rescue in the name of the girl and horse would be appropriate. Then when there is a bit more time, a portrait or nice picture of the horse framed would be a good idea. I cannot imagine the pain this family is going through. You are so wonderful to be thinking of this young girl at this horrible time and doing everything you can to support the family. |

Talking to the parents is a great idea. They'll know what will help her heal. The bills can be horrific, so chipping in for those is very thoughtful. I hope folks in the barn will let her ride their horse(s). I knew a teenager who went through a similar episode - though it was a twisted gut (I was the one who had the drag the horse out of the barn into the woods, and help with the autopsy - as he was insured. Awful!). Her barnmates got this youngster on a horse every day.

Actually, one of Milk Man's peeves at me is: NO gates in a corner, NO gates with more then 3" b/t the post and gate and the gate MUST close with no gapping - flat with fence line for just what happened. So sad. Planting a special tree/plant in honor of horse with all 4-Hers there would be a good way to let her talk it out too. An outdoor memorial. |

My first thought was one of the bracelets with the brass and leather, but I also wasn't sure if that was tasteful or not. A donation to a rescue with a nice card and something chocolate is also always appropriate. |

That's a great idea; it's thoughtful but not too personal or too specific about the horse that she will never get to know. I will definitely suggest this. There are definitely other horses she can ride and I know that the trainer is already scoping for new horses although it's probably way too premature. Lots to think about especially the disposition of the bills. I'll see the trainer tonight and maybe the kid; so we'll get a better idea of how things are going.....have thought of having the kid help me get my TB mare back into work now that she's dx with arthritis but have to look into insurance, etc. Not sure it's a good idea (for us) even though I think it would be great for her AND my fat mare. Thanks so much for all the suggestions and sympathy.

That's what we are planning to do when the old Paso Fino goes... We want to plant a tree over the spot where he is buried. |
