hi all, quick question...my brother in law is going to be in town this week for the Capital Challenge horse show and he wants to come out and visit us in Round Hill - or potentially Middleburg for Maya's lesson if that's closer - and he wants to know how far away we are. By looking at Mapquest, it looks pretty darn far and using the beltway for quite a bit. The mapquest estimate is 90 mins (78 miles). For those of you who travel there often, would you say that is an accurate estimate, assuming off peak travel? or is it a stretch of the beltway that you'll be sitting in for hours on end? We are about 10 mins due west of Leesburg if that helps anyone with timing estimates.

Would it be easier to have him come out when he's here for the WIHS later this month?

sounds accurate for non-rush hour.

I'd say that's pretty accurate. Obviously it'll take longer during rush hour but I'd say it would definitely be under 2 hours.

Coming out during WIHS might take less travel time but he'd have to navigate downtown DC traffic to get to you and that might not be something he'd want to do. Me personally, I'd rather sit on the beltway for an extra half hour than drive down by the Verizon center, but I don't do DC driving unless I have no other option.

yeah spoke to him last night, it's gonna be too far for him to come out so he wants us to come I guess it's next Saturday when the bulk of the pony classes go. I don't know if he has a pony showing or not, so I guess that will affect our experience but I'll probably take the kids. Doubt I'd be able to get my husband to go though, which is too bad since they never see each other. DH hates horse shows. :brickwall:

At least if you go to the Verizon Center, you can drop your DH off at one of the local sportsbars and he can watch whatever game is on while you guys enjoy the show -- or he could hit the museums! :teehee:

Maya -- Try to get the DH to go. As far as horse shows go, Capital Challenge is an easy one in that that you don't have to walk a million miles between the parking lot, barns and rings. It's all pretty compact. And in the indoor arena there's seating and it isn't dusty. So he could catch up with his bro in a semi-civilized fashion! On a Saturday morning, once you hit the Beltway it should take you around 40 minutes to get to the show if you don't hit much traffic around the Wilson Bridge. Traffic does build during the day so best to get an early-ish start.

thanks for the info Delia, maybe I can talk him into it...I'll try to convince him, but would do better if I could bribe him with something to do afterwards...any ideas in the area?

Now if only BIL can arrange for Maya to ride a fancy pony...too bad they don't have W/T classes :)

Unfortunately there's not really anything fun to do that's near the PG County Equestrian Center. At least not that I'm aware of.

But on your way home you could stop in Old Town Alexandria. If it's a nice day it would be fun to walk around a bit and grab a tasty meal. It's right off the Beltway after you cross the Wilson Bridge, so not out of your way at all, and about 15-20 minutes from the show grounds. Also right off the Beltway and nearby is Mount Vernon. And actually, stopping in either of those places would be a good shortcut to get home. Afterwards you could just hop on the GW Parkway going north to get to the Beltway, which is a pretty drive along the river, and once on the Beltway you only would have a few exits before hitting the Toll Road.

Well . . . . in Old Town itself there's pretty much just window shopping, eating, walking by the river, and checking out art at the Torpedo Factory.

I assume you've already hit the Mall to see the monuments, museums, etc. But if not, you could take Pennsylvania Avenue straight from the show into downtown DC to do that sort of thing. Other than that I'm tapped out on ideas!

Ugh, what the heck is OFF PEAK TRAVEL around this area? Three a.m.?

But yeah, it sounds pretty accurate to me. It's a fairly long drive.
