We seem to be having the worst luck this spring & summer. I had my eye surgery in June, Duffy got very sick on something he ate in July, my DS had to have hernia surgery in August, and now Duffy's is having surgery tomorrow! He has a growth on his right upper eyelid that needs to be removed. The vet said it has probably been growing for quite some time, but we never noticed because it was on the underside of lid and didn't bother him. Now it's creeping over the edge of the lid, is about 1/4" across, and really bothering his eye. I noticed it over the weekend because all of a sudden his right eye was producing goop like crazy. So, he is having it surgically removed tomorrow. We've been putting in eye ointment which seems to give him some relief but it's not a long-term solution. The vet will remove the growth and stitch the edges of his lid back together. She says she's done this numerous times and always had a good outcome. The good news is: It should heal very well, and vet says these growths are almost never cancerous, usually slow-growing benign things. The bad news is: Duffy has to wear an Elizabethan collar for two weeks and he HATES them. Guess he'll have to deal with it. Also he is 12 years old so surgery is a bit more risky. And I'm taking quite a hit to my savings account, but it's for a good cause, he should be all better soon. The other bad news is that he has a very tiny growth starting on his other eye. Vet said she can't remove it though, as messing with them when they are tiny seems to make them want to grow faster. Hopefully this one won't grow big enough to need to be removed.Anyway, jingles for Duffy Dog would be appreciated (again). Surgery is tomorrow, I drop him off on my way to work. He should be home that evening. Oh, and well he's under he's getting his teeth cleaned too, so he'll have better breath while he's recuperating.

Jingles for Duffy!! I've seen a handful of those little irritating eye growths. Recovery is usually uneventful. Are you having it sent out to the pathologist? Good luck with the E-Collar, I know it's a pain but think of the alternative... if he scratched at the incision you'd be bringing him back in and shelling out more money to fix it! Let us know how he does!

Jingles for Duffy There are some more comfortable alternatives to the hard plastic cones now- http://www.petco.com/product/100555/ProCollar-Premium-Inflatable-Protective-Collar.aspx http://www.petco.com/product/108491/All-Four-Paws-Black-Comfy-Cone.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-productdetail_1-_-All%20Four%20Paws%20Black%20Comfy%20Cone-108491 I don't know if they'd work for Duffy's situation, but it might make it a little easier on the poor guy. |

for Duffy Dog!!!!The inflatable e-collars seem to be a nifty alternative to the evil hard plastic cones. And they cause much less damage to the human legs that they get bashed up against compared to the plastic ones. But I don't know if they're good alternative for eye injuries. |

Tarragon, thanks for those links. Those collars look much more comfortable than the hard plastic ones. I'll ask my vet. The only thing is I wonder if he could still bend the one enough to get at his eye - he can't be allowed to scratch or rub at his eye at all until those eyelid stitches heal, or like Boston said, he'll make even more of a mess with things! The last time he wore an e-collar he ended up completely freaking out, panting and just laying there and not pottying or eating or drinking. But when he boarded at the vet with it he was fine. So hopefully he'll be more or less OK this time. The older he gets the more neurotic he is. He just doesn't have much choice this time.

Aww, I was going to suggest the inflatable collars as well, but I'm not sure they would protect his eye like a standard E-collar would. Have you asked your vet if you could just mildly sedate him during the healing process, so that he'd be less likely to scratch at his eye? Or that could also help with him freaking out with the E-collar on. |

Well I dropped him off this morning while he was giving me his big "beagle eyes." As in, "poor me, Duffy, she's leaving me again." I did ask about the inflatable and other e-collars, but the vet said, like I thought, they will not protect his eye as well as the regular ones. And we can't risk him opening up his stitches on his eyelid. That would not be good. She said for other things they can be great alternatives, but not for this. I also had the idea of a sedative or something like that, especially since we have to be gone part of th day tomorrow and I'd rather leave knowing he's just going to sleep (though I'll probably have one of my neighbors look in on him). They will let me know when I pick him up, said yes maybe it would help him when I have to leave him alone, or for the first few days. I can even probably just give him a Benadryl, that usually takes the edge off for him for things like fireworks. Hoping to hear later this afternoon that all is well and he is coming home.

Yeah that's what I thought about the E-collar. Benadryl is great. I have to give it to Piper & Wilson sometimes if they get hives. So if it works on Duffy to calm him down, use it!

Just heard from the vet a bit ago. Surgery went extremely well, the growth came off clean and his teeth are clean as well. She said he's waking up fine, thoug he's probably confused by the cone on his head. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork was sterling as well, she said you'd hardly know he was 12 years old. So I will pick him up tonight and then the 2-week adventure with the cone begins. But yes, the vet said I can definitely use Benadryl as needed to keep him calm, especially if we have to be away for a few hours.
