Hi all, ongoing saga of boots here....so I found the attached boots at a consignment store. They are about an inch too small in the calf but no zippers so I can work with them and they are very tall. The one thing I don't love about them is that they don't have a spanish top which I see on everything else and prefer. Granted I am not going to be going to any rated shows probably but you know me, I don't want to look out of place. They are Ariats made in Italy, she estimated the age to be about 4-5 yrs old, so they're not ancient. They are a good price and I think I can work with them...but need opinions on that top. Opinions?

My Dehners look just like that. No spanish top. These days I would go for the higher top, but they don't look bad, IMO. Sometimes the Spanish tops are ridiculous, if you ask me. IF these boots are the right price (including adding the zipper + elastic)...I say go for it. If they are SUPER tall, maybe you can have the top cut a little to give it that spanish flair. |

thanks, I do think they might be a hair TOO tall. (UGH) so I was wondering if they could be cut down a teeny bit. They are $162 plus shipping, and then adding what about $250 for work = $412+-. They are boots that were made in Italy, so nice quality. Think that it's worth it? |

I think they look fine. If you're having work done on them already and you really want a Spanish top, if the boots are a bit too tall maybe the tops could be recut a bit to get more of a Spanish look. I have no idea if that's even possible, but it might be worth looking into. |

I have a pair of Made in Italy Ariat dressage boots. If they're like mine, it will be well worth the money to have them adjusted

I think they look fine. I show in monaco's now but up until last fall I was wearing the Italian-made Ariat Crownes and still wear them to school They aren't super tall on the outside (though the appropriate height for me) and I'd still wear them to show in a hearbeat. Also, I've seen a lot of Spanish tops NOT fit people well because they aren't in exactly the right place so they go up over the knee cap or behind the knee. |

Miss Trainer, who knows what I like and my paranoia about too short boots, says I'll hate them. ARGH. I'm about 50/50 on trying them out...should I or shouldn't i? |

Considering youve tried EVERYTHING else, I think you should get them. The height will sink as you ride. Seriously though, if you dont want to buy customs, you may need to lower your standards a little I would suggest you call Journeymans and double check with them about adding a zipper though. They can not cut into the heal of the boot for the zipper. (Tiss what they told me many moons ago) Edited by OpticalIllusion, Jun 11 2010, 05:42 AM.

LOL I hear you on lowering my standards but these would likely end up to be $400-500 boots so I'd prefer not to hate them .I have been living at Journeymens lately and I asked them if I bought a pair of unzippered boots, what could they do to them and they did say if stretching wasn't enough, they could add a zipper and let them out at the same time. Their exact words. It was going to cost a pretty penny, but they said they could do it. I can return these boots if they don't work, but then I'm out shipping both ways. Just not sure what to do. I may not be going to the June 27th show now so wondering if I should just wait for something more perfect...but I don't want to lose the whole show season, ya know. So undecided. |

Mayaty...you're looking at $400-$500 anyway on something that is just "going to work for now". I would just go custom for $800 or so and get what I wanted. Here's the link to the Dehner price list. Fully lined boots start at $710. They will last through an Apocalypse...seriously...they will be around in 500 years to prove to future generations that we rode horses. http://www.dehner.com/pricelists/retail_price_list08.pdf |

LOL Oi, you're killin' me today. Problem is I don't have $700-800. I just don't, even at $400-500, I'm pushing it, maybe in two payments I can do it...but not all at once. I found a pair of Cavallos on www.cavelo.com and with the exchange rate, they would be $421 US including shipping. I'm wondering what the catch is. Woodys Wellington has them for sale for $800+. Is it just buying direct from Europe? The sizing chart is great and they seem to have my exact size, 50 cm/42 cm (19.7 in Height and 16.5 in Calf) which should be as close to perfect as I'm gonna get. The left calf is about a 1/4 in bigger than that measurement but I've gotta to hope that they can stretch that little tiny bit or perhaps i can just hack off part of my leg . But of course they are not returnable because it's not a size they stock and they'd have to be ordered...what do you guys think?
