Thanks JF, I was at Journeymans today and they huddled around and discussed it and thought they could definitely get an inch possibly more even with a zipper and a gusset already there provided it's not super rigid leather. I don't know how, but they said they could do it and depending on the exact boot, it could be as cheap at $30 or as much as $140. I assume the more expensive would involve doing some work to the boot other than stretching. Even the high side is tolerable since I do like the boots and the height isn't bad (20" new out of the box) So I ordered the boot (AGAIN!) and when it comes, I'll trot it down there and see what they say. God help me I am sick of this.

Just thought I'd update that I have just about given up....this morning was nearly in tears at Journeyman (how embarassing! ) but I just can't find an non-custom boot that will fit. The nice older guy there said, "can I give you some advice as a friend?....I said sure.....you're gonna need custom." Oh lovely thanks. I bought a pair of Ariat Challenger IIs which i don't like, because they are too short of course, but they are going to see if they can stretch them enough to fit...I need at least an inch so we'll see. Then they said they can replace the zipper and make them wider but that's $210 on top of the nearly $400 boot and I still have a boot that is way too short. I am so OVER this. It honestly feels like someone is conspiring against me getting back into the show ring (should I be taking a hint here???). Just feeling sorry for myself

That really sucks! I wouldn't dump the money on the Ariats, personally, if they're way too short anyway. If it were me, I'd buy some nice black paddocks and the nicer, tall boot looking half chaps and do the local show and in the meantime get measured for customs. That way you'd be able to show, have something you could still use for schooling but get the right fit of tall boot in the end. I know you said you don't want to show in half chaps but dang, that's a lot of money to spend on boots that you're not going to be happy with. Just my 2 cents. Honestly with the nicer half chaps, I can't tell they're not tall boots unless I'm literally right next to the person. |

I feel ya. I went through the exact same thing with my first pair of tall boots. I needed 21" height and a 14" calf, with a 10 foot. I ended up getting semi customs. Have you looked into that? |

I may have one...last...option....but it's a long shot. I am thinking of the Mountain Horse Supremes which are much taller than the Ariats, so they will suit me there, but the same calf width. SO if they can stretch them, they may work, but now i have to find a pair nearby so I can easily return them if (when)they don't work. Yes they are going to be $20-30 more expensive than the Ariats, but they are an inch taller and the spanish top looks even higher. Does sound crazy? I don't think I'll pay the extra $210 for the Ariats, we'll see. I hear you Barn Girl, but I don't have black paddocks or black half chaps, so I'd have to go spend money on those so we're looking at $200+ just to do that. Worst case I do have the pair of Mountain Horse richmonds which are way too short, but maybe I can just use them for one show. I'm just feeling like the gods have spoken and that i shoudn't show

There is a woman that shows her small welsh pony in paddock boots and garters. Not only is she huge on the pony, but then she's in garters. The welsh people are interesting. In your situation, I would probaly do half chaps for this show and then order some customs from one of the less expensive vendors. By the time you actually find something that fits and you're happy with, you'll probably have spent enough. When is your show? I'd be willing to overnight my boots to you so that you could use them. They should be tall enough, wide enough although maybe a little big in the foot. |

Snacky you are too sweet to offer but I'd be worried about damaging your boots The show is June 27th, if I go to that one which I'm not even sure about yet. I am going to try the Mountain Horses tomorrow and see if they can be stretched, once that option is toast, I'm back to square one. I want to stop by Upperville to see who the bootmakers are that might be there, I'm willing to do custom, but really can't spend $1000 to do so. There's gotta be a less expensive option between stock and custom.

Well, Mayaty: you ruin them, you buy them. I'm seriously fine letting you borrow them (with that policy in mind...they cost me $800, so not horrendously bad). I have a show on the 13th, but nothing planned after...I could easily send them and you could have them back to me pretty quickly...before they would be needed. I know your struggle and feel for you. If I can help, I'm more than willing. |

Thanks Snack Pack - you are too kind I just got the call from Journeymen that they can't get the stretcher even inside the Ariat boot so he won't be able to stretch them. (how is that possible????? ). I am going to bring the Mountain Horses over today but he basically said all zipper boots have this problem to some extent so it may be a lost cause. IF this fails, last option (in my mind at least!) is to get a pair of stock Der Daus, no zipper, and add a zipper which will add the needed width. The cost will end up at $500 but hopefully I'll have boots that are at least reasonably tall and fit. All else fails Snacky, I may be contacting you!

so I think I've decided what I'm gonna do...now you can all shoot holes in my plans Since my left leg is significantly bigger in the calf, though interestingly smaller in the foot , I am going to do custom or semi custom. BUT because I'm poor, I'm planning on getting them from Cavallo, from an online store in Germany (www.calevo.com). They have a huge range of sizes in their stock boots and they say they can make slight alterations without going full custom and the price is not to be beat. I am waiting for an exact quote but the stock boots are $420 including shipping, the alterations will add a bit but it will still not be anywhere near $900 min that custom boots in the US would be. I have sent them all my measurements and am just waiting to see what they can do. The downside is that it will likely be Christmas before I get them because they close down in July (and probably August!). I figure that I shouldn't be in a rush since I've gone 20+ yrs without boots and without showing, I'm sure I can manage a little longer. I do have a pair of Mountain Horse Richmonds that a very nice local trainer is willing to let me borrow for the occasional show, so I will still be able to show, albeit in too short boots. I do also recognize that it is going to be an issue if they don't fit when I get them...as they will not be returnable and I can't very easily/cheaply send them back to Germany...but I feel like it's worth trying. So come on TOC friends...tell me that I shouldn't do it.... PS I do know there is going to be an import tarriff...any ideas on how to find out how much? Edited by MayaTy02, Jun 15 2010, 07:36 AM.

Maya, did you see these? http://cgi.ebay.com/Vogel-Fieldmaster-Field-Boot-w-Zipper-Size-8-5-EUC-/220620859902?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item335e0729fe there are also these http://cgi.ebay.com/EFFINGHAM-FIELD-BOOTS-8-1-2-REG-MADE-AMERICA-NIB-/290445413679?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439fe54d2f but at a 14.5" calf you'd probably have to do some decent alterations to get them working. However, at $99, it may be worth a look ![]() These might be too big in the foot, but they're only $60! http://cgi.ebay.com/Used-Devon-Aire-Nouvelle-Ladies-Field-Boot-9-XWide-/290439143274?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439f859f6a |

Thanks so much for thinking of me French Toast I have seen all of those boots and unfortunaly the measurements aren't quite right, in particular, they are not tall enough. The Vogels I'm watching as the may work, and actually the same seller has another pair NIB that almost certainly would work, but at almost $900 and then needing to do work, it was still looking too expensive. I'm watching these though, I need to clarify the height measurement with the lister, I can't recall if I have asked already or not - I'm losing track!

What an ordeal! Honestly, black paddock boots & half chaps sounds far easier.....it's a shame that they aren't more acceptable. There must be so many people in this same situation....for example my 12 year old. I don't want to buy her anything that requires measurements....because they will NOT fit her in a year, if they even last that long. Good luck...
