I had a great lesson today and am really proud of myself for the progress I've made coming out of my weeniedom. I feel compelled to share with someone who can appreciate my moment of glory, lol. I had a horrendous fall about 2 and a half years ago and broke my back-- was really close to being paralyzed. It was awful. I started riding again after about nine months off, just taking lessons on quiet schoolies, and working my way back to w/t/c. Would jump an x or something now and then after about six or eight months but that was it. (I grew up riding hunters and jumped 3' regularly as a junior but hadn't really jumped in more recent history because I'd been doing dressage.) I changed lesson barns last summer and have to ride outside again (former barn had a lovely indoor that was really "safe" feeling). I've trotted some jumps and last week trotted in, cantered out of a line of two little gates. This week I cantered the whole line, and actually got it perfect after a few tries! Plus I rode out a buck when I was cantering and dug in a spur a little too much for my horse's liking. Not too long ago, that would've freaked me out so bad I would have stopped but I kept my canter and laughed it off. Not a big deal for most people but considering what a weenie I'd become since my wreck, super huge deal for me. I feel like I'm FINALLY getting over my weeniedom. I'm even sorta kinda looking forward to jumping courses again. Maybe I should make it a goal to jump a course by the 3 year anniversary of my wreck in September... or at least before I turn 39 in October. |

That is awesome!!! I totally get it - I've been in a situation where I became so scared of cantering or even trotting over a pole. So I understand the feeling of progress you've made - good for you!!!

Thanks guys! I knew y'all would understand. It really did feel like a monumental accomplishment and I'm so SICK of being scared, I think I finally just decided to get over myself. I only take one lesson a week at my trainer's right now. One thing that has helped me a ton with my confidence is being able to ride in my arena at home once or twice a week on my saintly old TB. He needed a home when my old lesson barn was closing down their program last summer and I took a chance on him and took him in. I didn't know if he'd be sound enough for light work or not (he was recovering from a torn tendon at the time), but he's sound w/t/c now. He's such a good man. It has really made me realize that too many people are too quick to write off the old guys, when they really can serve a purpose. He has a great "retirement" here and I have a wonderful horse to hack a little. I think the increased saddle time on something trustworthy has helped me a lot. Of course, he's still a TB so still has his "moments" but I'm pretty confident I can handle whatever he dishes out. He also has the BEST canter of any horse I've ever ridden. I adore him and am so thankful every day that I decided to let him come live here. |

BG, bless you for taking on the old guy and giving him a cushy retirement. I'm glad he's able to return the favor by being a safe, sane, FUN mount for you. He sounds much like my Win. It can be so hard to get over an accident, especially a serious one like that. Kudos to you for persevering and making progress! |

FG, it's funny, when you post about Win I think the same thing, that he reminds me of my Snoopy. He was a school horse for about 5 years and was an IHSA horse at Hollins for YEARS before that. So he's definitely paid his dues and I really do feel honored to have him. I think he actually likes having a little "job" babysitting me, it keeps his busy mind focused. Here he is: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5984040&l=960b75cac0&id=751961424 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3459901&l=d510afcf62&id=751961424 |

Aww he is a cutie! He is really lucky to have landed at your place! Nothing better than an old TB that has been around the block. They are smart and well broke but they still have a little zip in there. He looks great and has the same kind, wise expression as Win. Bet he's got a similar sense of humor, too.
