Geez, 3Bays, again we're on similar tracks! I'm also considering a Western saddle for Big Mac. KaliTude has offered to lend me her Circle Y saddle and I've got a saddle fitter coming out this weekend. How are you and Miss Fancy Pants doing these days? |

still flat in bed attached to oxygen and going back in for testing this afternoon for serious infection/temperatures that won't stop/feeling realllly lousy...and the ticker's not working right. ![]() But am looking at various ideas on western saddles anyway...keeps me from thinking and feeling too much about the health situation currently...dreaming of nice days "out on the road" with Fancy when I'm better...sent you a PM on it. SO, am currently considering this: http://www.buytack.com/products-saddles/fa/7152.htm Anyone here know anything on these? Also looking at Tex Tan trail saddles. |

Sorry your feeling bad. for a quick recovery. I have NEVER seen a Cordura saddle that wasnt junk. They just dont sit right and slide back. I coudl be wrong, this particular one might work, but I find the trend to be that they dont. Edited by OpticalIllusion, May 28 2010, 08:39 AM.

Thanks for the jingles, all of you ...off to the doctor/hospital for further testing...hoping NOT to stay!! I'd rather return to my OWN bed, oral medications instead of IV and shunts and my own oxygen cannister, thank you. HATE hospitals...not to mention with all the cortisone I'm on I'm a walking Petri Dish for infections that are rampant in hospitals ...my doc would prefer me home if it's manageable. Might get a home care nurse if nec. We'll see. Optical...I'd not heard that about the cordura types except for the Wintec westerns not working well (or the cheapie off brands)...most of the reviews on Abettas and Fabtrons so are have been positive...but, of course, who knows what the folks who had bad experiences might have said if they posted their reviews?! Well, I'm veering away from the leather saddles...first, due to cost, second due to the heavy weights. I'm not trying to do Western pleasure full time, either...this is for "dinking around" in my arena and going down my dirt road, so I don't really need to go "uptown" with a western saddle outfit...synthetic would be fine for me if I can find something that DOES fit my mare and me comfortably. (One GOOD thing about the "synthetics" is that they are light...easy to lift, etc., which is a good thing for me.) As to brands, I've tried a Big Horn and hated it, have been warned off of the Wintec westerns (what's up with the poor western rep by them, but they are the bomb in English???!)...so, that's why I'm looking at Abetta and Fabtron. But as to which one to try first, well... ---I dunno! There is one thing I DO love about real leather western saddles: I think they are GORGEOUS! Many are just true works of art. (Optical, bear with drugged-up ol' me if you've said before, but do you have a western saddle and if so, which kind?) |

I own all Circle Y's but have also ridden in Tex Tans. The TT's are heavy. My Circle Y (older show saddle with some silver on it and single back skirt) is not too heavy. My moms Park and Trail is pretty light too. My new show saddle weighs as much as me lol. If you get one of the synthetic ones, let me know how it is. |

(Note: managed to get the doctors to let me remain at home instead of the hospital, but as I'm STILL bedridden and BORED I'm letting my eyes do the shopping online! Been doing this for HOURS now...gazing and gaping at saddles! ) OK, found a leather saddle I can afford and it comes in my size and Fancy's gullet/bar size combination :http://www.statelinetack.com/item/circle-p-all-around-western-saddle/WKC24/ I FULLY realize this is a "lower end" leather saddle, but it IS leather and it certainly has all I need. I'm not going to be doing much...just some riding down the dirt roads by my house and dinking around in the arena...and it's incredibly hard to find my seat size with her bar size. Circle P is a brand put out by Wintec as parent company via Lami-Cell Products, so, it's not an "off" brand in the sense it's stuff from India or whatever, and most of the reviews I've read say it's fairly sturdy and lasts well. It's a simple type of all around saddle and not super fancy...just a tad bit 'o tooling and a simple light chestnut color...and I can fit that saddle plus the necessary supplies like a pad, rear cinch, breast collar, etc) into my budget --- which is kind of small .So, we'll see. I've got it on my list for now. I just don't like the synthetic stuff even though I know lots of folks swear by them...just lof the leather! Anyway, thought I'd share this one to see if anyone knows about it or has one. And, now I continue on looking! |

I wish I knew about western saddles so I could offer advice, 3Bays. I went through my saddle fitting yesterday and learned that it is a very nebulous art... and there really are no "standards" in the saddle-making world. One manufacturer's QH bars aren't the same as another's, etc... and it is hard to know what you like until you sit in one. I guess my advice would be to try to shop somewhere that has a trial policy so that if you or Fancy doesn't like it you can send it back and try something else. I found that I liked more of a trail model which has less leather under my legs and gives me a closer feel to the horse - so I get more of a feel of being in an english saddle but with the benefit of a western seat, horn, and fenders. Oh, and I've got to find my beer holder to attach to the horn! |

Oh, yeah, Fishy, I learned fairly quickly from all the reading and questioning folks and studying the various manufacturers that the standard is that there is NO standard! I was stunned to learn that "Full Quarter Horse Bars" stated by Circle Y has no connection to the same term used by five other makers! I also had to educate myself on the kinds of tree materials and what works and what doesn't. By the time I eliminated all the "bad ones" there wasn't much left I could afford. So, that's why I began to look at the synthetics...but honestly, I just don't want to go there. Anyhoo, the Circle P seemed like something to at least TRY. Yeah, if I go with Stateline/Horse.com or Chick's (who all carry this new saddle)they'll give you 30 days to try and return it if it's not going to work out. So, I guess I'll choose one of those to order it from and see what happens!! I understand about your going for the "less under the leg" idea...I may do the same eventually...but I wanted to see what a "western" kind of saddle truly felt like on Fancy first. I may not like it even if it fits us! In which case, I'll probably try something similar to what you did as to style. However, no matter what kind I get, it's GOT to have the drink holder!!! TOO important a thing to leave off, eh?? Oh, and one of the things I like about the Circle P is it already has the cantle dees for attaching things to the rear of the saddle...like cantle bags full of goodies to eat!!! Gotta trail in S T Y L E
