Bizarre question, I know, but the answer has gotta be nutritional... Twice now I have bought really pretty fire-engine-red chestnut heese and within a year under my care each of them has darkened to liver chestnut. In Q's case he shed out to almost chocolate brown this year!! It's FUGLY!!! Now, as those who know me can attest, liver chestnut is NOT my favorite color (yeah yeah yeah, "a good horse is never a bad color", I get that, and I know I should just plain be grateful to have a happy healthy horse, and I AM, but humor me...), so I'm racking my brains trying to figure out what the heck it is that I'm feeding (or DOING?) that makes this happen. Factors they have in common: Soaked alfalfa cubes in diet; both at varying times had canola oil added to feed for 2-3 months. Both are on night turnout when it's hot. Both get fescue hay BUT see next paragraph. In terms of topicals that might conceeeeiiivably (though I certainly can't see how???) affect the coat, I've always used the same 2 bug sprays, Bronco and Tritec 14. Factors they do NOT have in common: Age (23 and 4, respectively); breed (QH and ASB, respectively). Feed: Horse #1 got TC Senior; Horse #2 gets Nutrena Safe Choice. As to the fescue hay, Horse #1's hay was from mid-southern GA where the soil is red clay, and Horse #2s hay is from NW GA where there's no red clay at all. Have NOT had Horse #2s hay tested but may do just that! When I bathe Horse#2 with Vetrolin and sun-dry him (a sure-fire coat lightening technique!) he does NOT get his pretty "red" back, he just starts looking like.... a washed-out liver chestnut. Does anyone see anything that jumps out at them that might make a horse's coat turn that dark?? Anyone got any ideas what to do to get the red back?? I'm sort of thinking adding paprika would actually darken the coat even more, yes?? Thanks in advance! |

Can't give you any feedback on the colors, wierd, I have horses of many colors, bay, dark bay, light bay, chestnut, red bay, red chestnut, grey-white, steel grey and once the baby coat is shed the coat doesn't change colors. guess you're just lucky. But I have to hijack, I suddenly noticed you don't post on CoTH any more (?) What's up? |

Ahhh just bored w/ the snark, like everybody else who moves over here. Plus, frankly, I think it's going to be a LOT more interesting & fun to spring my baby greenie on everybody more or less sight-unseen, ear-unheard, and word-untyped when he's ready to rock Planet H/J. It's why I stopped blogging on him, too.But he's going to be a sight to behold, NOT in a good way, if I can't figure out how I could end up with a horse with a bright red chestnut mane and a body the color of cat poop!!

Well, I am ass-uming that is him in your avatar (I am so internetty, I can hardly stand myself) He does look very nice, but, perhaps you need to post a new pic of this strangely colored beast. Flash Gordon is probably up to her eyes in baby poop so might pop in on the color thing. Oh, excuse me, cat poop, jeeze, I should know all about that because I am up to my eyeballs in cats, but, they are mostly out in the barn, so I do not see their poop. Post a new pic anyway, and I will look for some cat poop and if I can, post a pic and everyone can compare (although I am not as internetty as I thought).

Ha ha smorse.... you got that right. I think I change like 6543745 diapers a day. Seems to be more yellowish poop tho as opposed to liver chestnut poop! WA no advice on Q's color. Any pics or vid to share? Last I remember he was just an unbroke youngin', would be cool to see how he has grown up! |

...And you guys think I'm making this up... Pic of Quattro's red-chestnut mane and liver coat: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/goonrgrrl/Quattro/liverANDchestnut.jpg I mean, how odd IS that??!!! To make matters even odder, his tail is mostly black, silver and white with a little chestnut mixed in!! He is bizarre. And Flash, since you ask, for which many thanks as it gives me an excuse for a brag, heehee, here's a quick vid of him jumping his first crossrail with a rider: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-eT5bpVXh4 We're still fighting the Battle of the Saddlebred Trot, but as of today it looks like a mullen mouth Pelham may start solving it. Hopefully. |

Now WA, I think he looks just fine. My version of liver chestnut is not like that at all. I just call that chestnut. What I think of as liver is very very dark, like mahogany. Is he what you call liver in the video, because I see nothing wrong with that color. If you want to see some strange, I have a Hanoverian who is light bay (actually he might be called buckskin, but not to the association, if you know what I mean) and in the inside middle of one of his front black legs is a patch of the light bay/buckskin). And, I have a yearling, who is at some point going to be grey, but he's kind of bay with a strange patch on his shoulder. And I have another foal from this year, who's ears appear to be steel grey and his body is looking like roan. Perhaps, if it is very hot this weekend, I will try to take pictures, try to upload them to my pc and try really really hard to post them here. but don't hold your breath. Oh, and his tail doesn't look mostly black in the video, maybe you just need to give him a bath Or maybe I need to get my eyes rechecked and get new glasses. by the way, Saddlebreds are my breed of choice, although I prefer a gaited one (perhaps you will see my name as the rider of the winner of the Ladies 5-Gaited Stake in Louisville one of these days). |

smorse - Cool, didn't know you rode ASBs! I love a good performance ASB, too, but I was looking for the right ASB sport horse when he came along. The vid was before he shed out and that is (what I believe to be) his normal nice red chestnut color. And yeah, I pretty much only wash his tail for shows - otherwise I'd be doing it every DAY!! I'll grant you in the photograph he's not *quite* liver but he's closer to it than I personally am happy with! IRL he's a lot closer to chocolate brown w/ red mane hairs than he looks in the pic. I'm trying to lighten him up though. *sigh* Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens... |

How about tryin' something like this... RED HORSES DANCE FOR JOY! FINALLY A DESIGNER COAT ENHANCER MADE JUST FOR THEM. RED-D-VINITY Finally, Cheval sees RED! RED-D-VINITY is a carefully formulated DESIGNER COAT ENHANCER to bring out the brillian red cleam on chestnut red, sorrel, roan and red pinto horses! THEY might not KNOW how to spell....but they can make a HORSE SHINE... I've used the Black as Knight a few times and it really works... SORRY you don't do Liver Chestnut...cuz I think it's a GROOOOVEY color.. HH
