We ran into a situation today where my one of my daughter's friends invited herself over to our house and it appeared that the girls had been conspiring about riding our little mare. In the end I nixed the entire deal but I was glad it didn't happen because I know that if I had said yes I'd have kids negotiating about riding and I don't know how to handle it. For those of you with home barns - do you let others ride on your property? Do/would you let children ride? What if their parents were present? I let my boarder ride her horse (obviously), and I let my friend ride my horse recently....but in these cases they are adults that have riding experience, so I wasn't too worried...? I have a large umbrella policy on my farm essentially to cover the most likely scenario -- horse (mine or boarded) gets out and causes damages to people or property. Since no one rides here but my family, my boarder (on her horse), and our trainer (who is insured)....I thought this was enough. |

well here in VA everywhere I go to ride, backyard barns to training stables, I have to sign a release of liability...wonder if it would be the same in NY? I definitely wouldn't let the child ride on your property.

You need to talk to your insurance agent about carrying some sort of liability policy or umbrella policy to cover these situations if you are going to allow people to ride on your farm other than your family AND have signed releases. The release can and will be challenged if there is an accident so they do not protect you completely from legal hassle. |

We have an umbrella policy (a big one) so I think we're covered for a lot of things, but a child rider is a whole new issue! I'm not sure I'd know how to protect ourselves even with releases. I know releases will be challenged but at least in the case of an adult it shows that they intended to "ride at their own risk". But with a child....I can't imagine that having their non-horse savvy parent sign a release would actually do much for us if the kid got hurt. The parents (or laywers, etc.) could easily claim that they weren't fully aware of the risks, and it would probably be true. Oh well, I guess I'm not likely to ever let anyone else's kids ride here....glad I'm not the only one with that gut feeling. But it's too bad things have changed since we were kids. Sad.

I would say if you have neighborhood kids that want to ride make sure you have their parents look over and sign a waiver. Even with a waiver if does not mean if something does happen that you won't be at fault. Most health insurance companies will want to get paid, accident or no accident, and will go after anyone to get their money. |
