I think his friends have the saying "what happens at the deer lease...STAYS at the deer lease....I don't ask what he spends there.....OR I WILL GET MAD... :tantrum:

I'd love to do the YOUR LEASE COSTS X AMOUNT a MONTH like he TALLIED UP FOR ME.....but THAT is WAY TOO MUCH TO ADD :innocent:

I don't hide anything, not worth it. If he asks, I answer. He doesn't ask, so no big wup. He knows the horse is the one other thing (besides him, natch) that makes me smile. :P

HOWEVER,

I also don't ask how much the antique truck stuff is either. The new truck went in pieces to the painter last week, and what I thought it was going to cost to paint, and what it's REALLY going to cost are two different things!! He offered the price the guy is doing the work for cheerfully to me, like it was a good thing. So, that's that. It makes him happy, and that's what it's all about.

Rach, just be yourself NOW, so there are no money surprises later. If you want to keep him 'out' of the know w/ the horse stuff, now's the time to do it. Want it all out in the open? Fine, whatever you are comfortable with.

Well, Dyrk is a horseman, so we talk over the horse stuff (Bam Bam is HIS). He is a great sounding board on the breeding stuff. He is the one that told me to buy a new carriage, and that is a major expense!

As far as clothes go, I am very low maintenance! $16.00 jeans are a big extravagance! :teehee: I do want a new pair of Danskos but can't get up the gumption to fork over $110.00!!!!

We are in reverse of most couples on here in that I have the addiction to the critters and my wife has the addiction to things that sew and cook. She has 5 sewing machines and yes they all work and for some strange reason they are all "needed." I added up the feed bill last month for 3 4-H steers getting fat, 7 pigs getting fat and 6 horses. It was $1,500 and that didn't include hay. (Granted it was enough to finish the projects but still) I no longer say a word about the sewing machines and happily built a room for her to house her hobby. It makes her happy and keeps me from going crazy! Balance is the key. Similar to the adult magazine thread it is all about the honesty. LF

Everything is in Quicken so hubby can see whatever he wants to see. Most of the time he doesn't want to see. It's probably better that way.

We always talked generally, but not specifically about the day to day expenses. For example, he knew how much I spent on board when I boarded my pony for the winter, and when I bought bedding and feed for the when she was home, he knew how much the grand total expenditures
were. And how much the blacksmith cost, how much vet cost. But, we never sat down with a spread sheet and worked out the totals. So, no idea if he had any idea how much it all *really* was. I know I didn't. :teehee:

For small purchases, like new breeches, a show shirt, halters, buckets, I'd buy what I needed. For anything more than two hundred bucks or so, like new boots, new saddle, I'd talk to him about it. It wasn't a matter of "asking permission," but just cluing him in as to the costs of my hobby. Of course, this is the same guy who decided one day he *needed* an ATV, and went out and bought one. An expensive one. A seriously expensive one, like that cost more than my gooseneck trailer (the one I bought before I met him). I think, because he didn't actually want to tell me what he really paid for it. One that now sits in storage for far longer than we ever used it.

Interestingly, for half of our relationship together, I was working and we had independent finances. Once I had the children, though, I stopped working and became financially dependent. Nothing changed on the surface, but it did make me feel ookier about spending money. Suddenly, I was spending money someone else had earned. That didn't feel quite as *right* as spending money I had earned. <shrug> I suppose that is the age old plight of the housewife. :teehee:

Well, I am a fan of don't ask, don't tell.So he does not ask and I do not tell, LOL!! My Dh is pretty in the know about what I pay for what. And if he asked I would tell him. But I think we are both happier just not always talking about it,LOL!! But everything horse related comes from money that I make. It does not come from the "family" money. So If I can not afford it, it does not happen. On the other hand I try to not spend every dime I make on horse things.( You know the kids need clothes too,LOL!!)

I do want a new pair of Danskos but can't get up the gumption to fork over $110.00!!!!
I couldnt make myself spend the money either. So I asked for them for Christmas (yeah, same money, but I dont have to actually watch it disappear) and am so thankful for them. Best shoes Ive ever owned.

I love the look of them and used to wear them all of the time. However after going over on my ankle twice badly I have stopped wearing them much. What size and colour were you looking for CDE? I have a pair I have worn twice just sitting in the closet that would love to do some traveling :teehee:

I've almost killed myself numerous times in my Danskos - finally just threw them away - you couldn't pay me to wear them again!

Since Mr. Fishy is a horse person, too, there's no hiding anything from him. Not that I would want to, anyways. What's the point in lying? IMHO it breeds dishonesty and mistrust. That's not to say that I come home and tell him, "I spent $200 on a new helmet today," or whatever the case may be, but I do tell him when I buy new things (which is rarely). We share a lot of the horse costs so he knows the price of things, including showing.

Honestly, I don't understand buying a horse and not telling DH about it - how do you do it? How do you hide the excitement? How do you not talk about Dobbin without DH knowing what is going on?

Oh I love Danskos! I've always been able to snag them with tack shop discounts though, so I've never paid full price. I do twist my ankle from time to time, but that isn't enough to pry them out of my hands. I'm a 38 if anyone is unloading clogs!
