I have a gorgeous Duncan Phyfe dining room set - Mahogany table, buffet, and 6 shield-backed chairs. The table is an oval top with one leaf, single pedestal with 4 urn turned columns. Unfortunately, the base of the table was badly damaged in a previous move; two of the legs were broken almost completely off the pedestal and one of the legs was split down the middle where the two pieces of wood were joined. I had it repaired, but the guy didn't do the best job and the repair is failing to the point that I'm not comfortable using the table anymore. I have an appointment tomorrow with an antique refurbishing specialist to see if it's salvageable.

If it's not, I have two choices: find another table with the same base and replace the base (my table top is undamaged) or buy another table that looks nice with the other pieces. I'd REALLY like to keep the same style, but it's proving very difficult to find. It's most similar to this table http://www.goantiques.com/scripts/images,id,2097376.html but my top is different and it looks like the posts on the pedestal are farther apart.

Are any of you familiar enough with Duncan Phyfe furniture to give me some guidance? Or has anyone seen this type of table before?

TIA!

OUCH.....SORRY TO HEAR about this...Your table is beautiful.....

I have one too....but rectangle and 4 leaves!!......I CRAPPED when the cat scratched it....I would wrap it in bubble wrap if I could...My legs have come unglued and I have "fixed" 2 of them....

I'm sorry that this has happened...I wish you luck....I found mine at an auction....it took me 2 years...and a 2 hour drive...BUT so worth it....IF you can't salvage it or it's just too costly....GIVE an auction a try....you might be able to find one like that OR something LIKE it...

Thanks HH, and I SO hear you on the bubble wrap!!! :teehee: :shoot: I know our rotten no good cat and I are going to WAR when I actually get the table set up in the house; the squirt bottle is going to get quite the workout! :pissed: But, I won the counter war of '09... :one:

I just got home from dropping the base off with my new, awesome antique restorer guy, and the fabulous news is my table is totally fixable! :woot: He's going to call me with an estimate after he has his various specialists (laminate guy, syringe glue guy) look at it. I am so relieved, especially since one of the legs fell COMPLETELY off when I was getting the base out of the car. From our conversation I am thinking the total will be between $600-$800, which I can deal with, considering the table is so unusual (he hadn't seen anything like it) and replacing the entire set would cost me upwards of $6-$10K!

I'm absolutely :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:
