Ellen, I was thinking about you and your family over the weekend.

I have a feeling your mom hung on until you could get there and find your peace.

Sending out lots of prayers for all of you.

I think we treat our animals better then we treat our humans when it comes to end of life.

Hugs to you and dad, Ellen.

Big hugs. I was just thinking about you. Its been almost two years since my grandfather's passing (he was much more like a father to me than a grandfather). The hospice nurses and other staff were absolutely wonderful. It was nice to know that he was well taken care of and comfortable. Dying was much harder on my mom, my grandmother, and myself than it was on him. Then just a month after his passing my grandmother fell and broke her hip. It meant that she was unable to return home and is now in a retirement facility that is absolutely wonderful but its just my mom and myself to help her. We didn't know what a full time job she had become until we were taking care of her.

I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers..

Sorry for the delay in update, I just wasn't up for it.

My mom passed away shortly after my last update, so about a week ago. The arrangements had all been done prior, so the wake was a day later, and then the funeral the next day. We held a casual reception after the funeral.

The entire experience was incredibly draining; my parents still live in the town I was raised in so, many, many people came to pay their respects. People I had not seen in 30 years showed up to offer their support, plus my mother was very active in the community, so she had hundreds of people come to talk about the impact she had on their lives (she was sober for 32 years and sponsored countless women in their efforts to be sober).

Doing it all without my husband to support me was really hard, although, it made me very conscious of the fact that while I was desperately wanting my husband to lend me an arm, I would see him again. My father was wishing for my mother for the same reasons, and he would never see her again.

My flight back to my family was the day following the funeral. The weather in Nanjing is gorgeous and I am struggling with loss, time zone changes and the fact that we are leaving Nanjing in two months. I have so many friends here (as do my children) and as much as I am feeling ready to leave and am very excited about where we are going (Czech Republic), the idea of leaving my life behind and starting over again is overwhelming. :,(

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the good wishes. I am doing okay. I am counting the positives: I'm surrounded by family who love me, friends who are incredibly supportive and the weather is nice, and the future is something I am excited about. Thanks for being there, and listening. It means so much to me.

When I am feeling up to it, I am going to start that thread I mentioned on death and dying. Having experienced it closer than I ever have before, I'd like to talk about it. There are so many knowledgeable people on this board (the BHs!!), who can provide some insight, plus of course all of our own personal experiences I think with be carthetic for me, and maybe informative, too.

Again, thank you, Ellen
